Subject: 98 dakota 1st to 2nd shifting problem IP: Logged
Message: My dakota just started to delay in shifting from 1st to 2nd gears. The RPMs have to get to 2500-3000, the speedometer isn't working until the RPMs get to around 3000, then it shifts into 2nd gear and the speedometer starts working. No other shifting problems, no slipping.
Any suggestions on what it needs? Speed sensor?
Thanks,
Dave

Message: with what you described it sounds like the RWSS(rear wheel speed sensor) located on the top of the rear end is bad. not hard to change.

Message: How much for the part and does Advance or Autozone carry these? Exactly where is it located on the rear end?
Thanks for the info.

Message: not sure probably $30. A/Z, Advance, Oreilly's should have it. it's located on top of the center section of the rearend. you may be able to look for the location of it on A/Z's website.

Message: also check the sensor drivers side of trans
it runs the speedo
The RE electric gov presure controled trans has
to have all the sensor feed back to the comp or
they will just not work right
that bad scan for trouble codes it should have
triped it by now

Message: Larry,
Where are the sensors located on the driver's side of the transmission? Costs and ease of replacement by an amateur? I haven't had a scan for bad codes yet. Should I get one? What is your opinion of the other posts, being the rear wheel speed sensor?
Thank you for your post and help.

Message: does the speed sensor effect the way the trans shifts also? its sounds like you lost 2nd gear in your trans. its just revving high in 1st so it has enough pressure to push it into 3rd. i hope im wrong and its just a couple sensor and your problem is fixed, but from what you describe about how the trans is shift that sounds like you lost 2nd gear.

Message: Well I just replaced the Rear Wheel Speed sensor on my 98 Dak, and it cleared the Brake and ABS light and the speedometer started working normal. It only took like less than 5 min to install. It was funny that AutoZone and Kragen Auto and NAPA didn't carry the part, they didn't have it in there computer. Had to go to the dealer to get the part, it was like 48 bucks. Thanks guys for all your help, saved me like $180 from the dealer. I love this site.

Just delays from 1st to 2nd.

Message: I have had that problem before, it was the transmission speed sensor, I think thats what its called. Is you check engine light on? if it is that will most likely be it.

Message: I have a similar problem with my automatic v8 98 dak, except mine is from 2nd to 3rd. I have to get to at least 3000rpm and then let off the gas to get it to shift up, shifting down is fine. I have no speedometer issues, my check engine light wont come on, and the brake lights work fine. Also when I check the computer for error codes I get nothing, but something is very wrong and I'm praying its a sensor of some sort and not my transmission. any suggestions? any help will be appreciated.
Thank you,
Sean
