Subject: Prelube new longblock IP: Logged
Message: What's the recommended procedure for prelubing a rebuild 3.9 engine? Instructions (generic) with the longblock say to use a pressure pre-luber OR a sutable tool to spin up the oil pump.
My question is, can I use a long screwdriver with the handle missing and chuck it in my power drill to prelube it? OR do I need a special tool for that job. I know on a small block chevy you used to be able to take off the gear, and grind down the shaft on top of an old distrubitor and use that as a prelube tool.
I'm trying to same some $$ if I don't have to rent/buy more tools to get this done.
Thanks.

Message: Screwdriver without the handle might work ok. myself I built mine from 3/8 round stock and 1" flat bar welded on to the end of it. then I shaped it as needed. not hard to do. used mine in the shop for 40 years. still got it. remove the valve covers. when you see oil being pumped to all the rockers, your in business'
So many problems .... So little time

Message: you will need your drill but most auto parts stores carry an oil pump primer for $7-9.
