How difficult is it to replace the rear axle bearings & seals??

Do the bearings stay in the housing or are they pressed onto the axle??

TIA

Service manual states the axle slides out of the shaft tube & the bearings stay in the shaft tube............should be easy enough to replace....

The manual does talk about the Trac-Loc Diffs, How easy is to see if you have one once you open the cover??

Will you be able to see the clutch packs they talk about?

Thanks, Sigma

You'll be able to tell when you pop the diff cover off whether you have open or locking gears.

If it doesn't fit, force it. If it breaks...well...it needed to be replaced anyway.

Jack it up and remove the tires you need to do
both sides at the same time

You may need to back off the break adjusters so
the shoes clear and thr drum will not hang up

If the drum is stuck on thats ok just pull as assy

remove the 10 bolts from the rear cover rotate
untill you find a bolt going in from the side
remove this bolt now position it so you can
remve the pin that holds the 2 spider gears
and the bigger opening is towards you

now with this pin out push in on 1 axle and look
where the pin was you will see a c clip remove
this and the axle will slide right out

you will need a slide hammer or puller to pull
out the seal and bearing replace little grease on
seal dont mare it when you slide the axle back
put the clip on pull back so the clip seats
now do other side

try not to turn anything when removing or instaling the axles it will keep the spiders
lined put the clip on that axle and reinstall
the pin and bolt you may have to turn things a
little so they line up

Use some good 75 90w Amsoil or a good name syn
is a lot better than reg 90w

run it and than recheck than once a month just
to be sure its all ok I check my rears twice
a year

Thanks cuzindoug & J and J Auto

Sorry for the slow response but that holiday needed attention……..

I found my slide hammer puller, making arrangements to have the new cover powder painted, just need a good weekend to do it. Looks like towards the end of the month due to the paint………

Have to replace the old cover due to the rot & oil stain starting to weep through.

Thanks again !!

Had Great Weather & the cover was painted quicker than I expected so I installed the bearings Saturday. Filled the housing Sunday morning. No problems doing this.....Runs smooth & quiet. Should have done this years ago.

Noticed some abnormal wear on the pinion gear shaft. Looked like the gear had some how damaged the shaft. Odd looking though, it was not a circular score on the shaft but a ripped section on the shaft, like it had seized & then freed.

Next time I go in I will replace the shaft & gears.

Thanks again cuzindoug, J&J Auto
