Subject: Take a look at these brake shoes (pic) IP: Logged
Message: I went to a shop for a safety inspection and they told me I need new brake shoes. This is what they look like:

Well? They said the problem is not the thickness, but the gap in the middle. I know it's BS, 'cause they only took a look at one wheel, and the second had exactly the same gap. They said a spring probably fell off and made this gap..whatever. I told them it is made like this by design, but they said "never...". So is this normal or I have some defected shoes? I'm really not happy with this shop and about to go give them some hard time if these shoes are fine.

Message: It does look like it was made that way...but significant braking surface is lost by using these. I'd get new ones ASAP. I spend a few extra bucks and get good semi-metallics at the dealer. It's worth it when our lives are riding on it.

Message: I would have to agree that it does look like they were made like that. I would think they would be O.K. to use if you are tight for cash right now. You will get a lot of miles out of them and I don't think it would be a safety hazzard. Make sure they are adjusted correctly and run em'. How are the drums??

Message: The drums are ok, or at least the mechanic didn't say anything bad about them. I don't see any problem using these brakes, because my braking is fine and rears aren't as important as fronts. Oh, and the second piece of the shoe set (on the same wheel) doesn't have this gap, so I'm not really sure why they made it like that, but as long as it was designed like this I should get that shop to cooperate.

Message: I have seen brake shoes like that in Canada on another application, I think it was a way to "self clean" so that they didn't squeal so much from the excess dust. I wouldn't be afraid of them at all. Go tell the shop to stuff it!

I've got 500,000 miles on mine.
Maybe mine don't work right either.....

Message: Yeah, and mine has only 80k miles...got it when it had 75k. They are probably factory shoes too.
