Never done one yet but include removing the fan and pullies, front engine cover, timing chain and gear on cam, push rods, lifters, radiator, distributer and valley cover. I may have missed something here. I have seen cases where the grill needed removal but most likely not on the Dakota. Use differant containers for bolts/nuts and such. Mark the container ass to where that group goes. If you don't and your not a die hard mechanic, you'll get wrong bolts in wrong places and before your done, you will have some that wont fit lengthwise. Some will try to shortcut this procedure but not worth fighting it.

So many problems .... So little time

You'll need to remove the radiator, but you can leave the A/C hooked up and the condenser in. There is just enough room.
Be really careful removing the cam. You may be able to re-use the bearings. The hardest, most time consuming, special tool requiring part is removing and installing them. If your oil pressure is good, you ought to be okay.
When you put the new roller rockers in, be sure the oil hole is in the right position.
Line up the "DOT" on the cam and crank.
Be sure #1 valves open and close properly so you are sure you are in TDC and ready to fire.
Align the rotor to the notch in the distributor housing. Your timing is set. Period. Do not use a timing light or play with advancing or anything. Computer controls ignition. Base timing controls fuel.
Be sure you have it put together right. I had to take mine completely apart 3 times before I got it running.

screweduphead,do you have any mechanic stills?

if you did,nt realize pushrods motors are so complex, this may not be something you should do,even with a repair manual

not to say you could,nt do it right,BUT you could do more harm and cost you more in the end

if you want to do this yourself find someone who knows how and willing to help, give you advise/explain things as they arise, even if you had to give them a few $,this could save you alot plus you get the knowledge at a much cheaper cost

just my thought

screwuphead, I've never seen a repair manual for the RT only. The Haynes repair manul covers both the Dakota and the Durango but that doesn't matter either since you are only concerned about the engine. The most recent one covers the 3.9 5.2/5.9 and 4.7 engines. These manuals are available in virtually every store I've been in. Occasionally they are out of stock but I'm sure they would gladly hold one for. They are also easy to find on-line.

Yet my dad does, excecpt he is against me moddify my truck, yet when i buy parts and are ready to insteall them he is there to help. SO i aint worried about screwing anything up. I rather figure out how things are done before i get my hands dirty.

KRC 210 cam or either of the hughe engines cams
run very well but you will also need to change
the valve sprigs so plan on pulling the heads its
the easyest way

they can be changed without removing the heads
but its a real pain

KRC has the R/T spring kits for the V6 $285 it
includes springs retainers keepers and new seals
a good deal .600 lift the stock springs will bind
just over .500 lift

Or put your truck on a truck, and send it to larry, that way you'll know it's done right. Oh yeah make sure the glove box is full of cash, GOFAST v6's aren't cheap.

All the more reason to buy yourself a repair manual. I doubt that I could trouble shoot a motherboard without a manual either.

screwuphead,
If you don't need to use the truck, go for it.
Like the mechanical, or soft side, of computers, the best way to figure out what's going on is contemplate.
It's time-consuming, but if you make a diary of how you took it apart, you won't lose nuts and bolts and stuff. Really frustrating having left over parts.
If you run into a problem stop. It'll wait for you.
After all is over and done, you'll have a great sense of accomplishment and a newfound respect for those who know how to fix cars and trucks.
