Message: I had the same thing on my 2002 QC. It turned out a vapor hose under the hood was bad. It was coming from the LDP (Leak Detection Pump) which is under the rear corner of my battery.
The hose coming off of it goes into a plastic "T" fitting with a green cap. The hose was split where it was pressed onto the fitting. I trimmed it, reset the code, and it has stayed off.
Check all the hoses involved in the vapor recovery system. There is a diagram under the hood. If this works for you it's a free fix unless you need to buy more hose. Should you need to buy more hose buy fuel line, not vapor hose: it'll stand up to the heat far better and last much longer. Fortunately the hoses on my truck are marked with the inside diameter - 1/4" and 5/16".

Message: i have the same truck, and this happens to me about twice a year. it's the gas cap. after getting the 0442 code, i take off the cap, and put it back on turning it 2 1/2 to 3 turns, as i do after getting gas. erase the code, and you're good to go.

Message: Another leak source is on the charcoal canister. It's located inside the left frame rail below the driver's seat. These hoses are a little larger and a crack will give the same code.

Message: I have a 2002 Dodge Dakota Sport, and my check engine light had come on, pulled the codes P0455, P0442. Checked all the Evap hoses under the hood all the way to the gas tank. I found a split in one of the hoses that connects to the Evap cannister under the truck. Cut off the split part, re-attached the hose, and not light after three weeks. Hope this helps!

Message: Just wondering......Where can I find a code list for my 2002 3.9L? I have a list of codes however I think it is only a partial list, not a complete one. Just wondering if there was a website with all the codes. Thanks.

Message: Had the same problem 2 times with my '01 Dak. The first was last year when i got the truck inspected and got the code and found that the hose connected to the "T" fitting was cracked and replaced it. Couple months ago my engine light came on again just in time for my inspection lol and was stumped looking around to find another crack and after reading this thread with "Modains" suggestion to look under the drivers side for the charcoal canister and the two hoses. Bingo!! both were cracked and actualy one was hanging off...So thank you Modain for your input, if not for that i probably would still be looking.

Message: I have a 02 Dakota and the MIL lite comes on with a 0442 code. I found it at AutoZone. They reseated my gas cap and reste the code. I thought that was pretty cool. The code came back and they sold me a new gas cap, reset the code and I was on my way again. The code came back. I purchased my own OBDII/CAN code reader online for $59. I went to the local Chrysler Dealer and bought an OEM cap and reset the code myself. I went on a trip and back That was 3K miles the whole time the lite didn't come on . I figured that was it. The third day of driving to work the MIL came back on with the P0442 code. This is getting frustrating. I bought the 2002 Dakota service manual on CD and going to check the whole EVAP system starting with the PCV and hoses. That looks to be the easiest and least expensive.

Message: Don,
The '02 Dak (and many others) has a leak detection pump which activates under certain conditions to test the integrity of the EVAP system. Some of the conditions ( there may be others) are: Ambient temp. between 39F and 89F, cold start, fuel tank between 12% and 75% full. You're right about checking the hoses first. I found age cracks in mine in 2 places. Likely locations are at terminations at canister or fittings.
