Subject: Brake rotor installation IP: Logged
Message: I might need to install new front brake rotors on 97 Dakota. How hard is it to replace them? Just want to get a feeling of it. And how do I know for sure that they are too thin? How much thin is too thin?

Message: you can check the thickness with a micrometer. the min. thickness allowed should be stamped on the center section of the rotor if they are stock.

Message: All the next presumes the rotors are not part of the hub.
Buy rotors.
Buy brake pads. (ceramic, I'm told, are really good)
Remove wheel. Unscrew 2 screws on rotor.
Un-attach brake caliper and move aside.
Remove rotor and discard. Install new rotor. You don't need screws.
Re install caliper, after liberally re-lubricating.
Reinstall wheel.
Before doing the above, have the brand-new rotors turned. They probibly need it.

Message: you may be able to get away with leaving the brake line connected to the caliper and not have to bleed.
be sure to clean the new rotor with brake cleaner and wipe clean with lint free rag.

Message: I looked hard at the rotor, but couldn't find anything about its minimum size on the rotor. There was some faded "16x11.." number, but that didn't really tell me anything. Anyway, the outside side was about 11mm, and the inside 7-8mm. I think it's time for new ones?

Message: no need what so ever to remove the brake line unless your replacing it or the caliper.... just unbolt the caliper mounting bolts and the rotor slides off....
