Message:
My trans temp light came on this morning in my 99 3.9. I haven't looked at the possible causes yet - any ideas? My engine temp is right around 190-195. I just put a new water pump on last week and put one gallon of antifreeze back in the radiator. It seems like it should be a little cooler than the 190-195. Would low tranny fluid cause the trans temp light to come on?

One thing I forgot to add - the OD OFF Light came on too just before the TRANS TEMP light came on.

Shane,
The engine coolant and tranny fluid are completely independant of each other, except for that they route to the same place. If the trans temp light came on, STOP DRIVING THE TRUCK as soon as possible. Yes it could be low fluid, could be a leak, could be the radiator plugged up and not circulating tranny fluid. I would check the fluid first. IF it's low, there is your culprit. Second, it should be a bright red color. IF it's red brown or really dark red, and smells burnt, you need to completely flush out that fluid. If you keep driving your truck with that light on, you are probably causing alot of damage and might be frying your tranny to the point of needing it replaced. Hope this helps..

Thanks - yes, I know that the radiator anti-freeze and tranny fluid are independant of each other. I just thought that it was a coincidence that the trans temp light came on after I'd changed out my water pump and added anti-freeze. I checked the fluid and it looks nice and red (so far). I guess I should unhook the tranny lines next and see if there's anything restricting the flow of the fluid in the cooler. What do you think?

did you change the t-stat when you changed the waterpump? if not you should. also, when the trans gets too hot the PCM will lock out o/d to help it from overheating any more.

I didn't change the t-stat. It was changed about 50K miles ago, so I didn't mess with it. I suppose I should go ahead and put an new on in it just to be safe. Is it possible that the tranny filter is clogged up? I just changed it about 15K miles ago, so I would think it would be ok.

check your fan clutch and rad cap. you may also want to consider adding an aux trans cooler or aux electric cooling fan or both. for sure nothing would overheat then.

You should probably change the t-stat. They are only about $8 and not a hard change. You might have part of the radiator plugged up. Daddio might ahve the best suggestion, I put a aux tranny cooler on mine, towed 3500 lbs 2400miles with a v6 auto in 80 degree weather. Tranny never slipped or got hot, stayed really cool for the abuse I was giving it.

For a stock set up, would it be better to go w/ the 180 or 190 degree t-stat?

for a stock setup, stay with the factory 190/195 whatever it is. i tried a 180 and my truck didn't like it. all it did was burn more fuel with no gain in power and in the winter, it took forever to warm up to temp. and i live in south louisiana so we have virtually no winter.
