my 98 dakota 3.9 automatic seemed to be slipping in the trannt this morning. after parking it all day it cranked fine and drove fine for about a mile. then the whole truck began to shutter and appeared to misfire. it seems to run alittle better when i changed the dirty air filter. the rpm's tend to jump between 550 and 1000 at idle and it cuts off after 30 seconds. would the slipping be tied to the same thing, and is it thr tranny or the fuel system. and where is the fuel filter?

fuel filter is in the gas tank and really doesnt call for any type of service.... i think runnin problem isnt tranny related.... i think you have misfire thats causeing it to seem like a tranny is slipping... but how does the truck run when your driving and does this problem only happen when you come to a stop and idle while in gear or out of gear like being parked....

I have run into a few coils that were going bad
and seamed and felt like the trans but was actualy
the motor cutting in and out
might be worth taking a look at this

Be sure the engine is right before looking at the transmission.
My 98 3.9 had a problem where the torque converter unlocked and locked, on cruise, causing a mildly annoying surge. I was told by 3 dealers and 2 transmission shops to replace the transmission.
My oil analysis showed no mechanical problem so I left it alone.
That transmission has 500,000 miles on it.
What caused the surge? Throttle Position sensor.
