Subject: 1990 3.9L v6 engine and tranny problems IP: Logged
Message: I bought my '90 Dakota about a month ago. It has a 3.9, auto tranny, and 156,000 miles on it. When I first start it up, everything is fine. After about ten miles, however, The tranny and engine start acting up. When I get off the gas, the tranny seems to go into neutral and re-engages about 4 seconds after I get back on the gas. It(the tranny)won't even hold the truck in place on a hill, like when stopped at a light. It also shifts rather hard. I took the truck into a local small-time dependable repair shop for the hard shifting, and they softened it, but it still shifts hard. It used to shift harder than any manual tranny EVER could. It was like I was going 30mph and someone rearended me at 70mph. No lie. Neck-breaking shifts. Also, when the tranny starts acting up, the engine starts freaking out. When I slow to turn or stop, the oil pressure light comes on, and the gauge drops all the way. It starts idling really low, and sometimes dies. It's REALLY REALLY IRRITATING. The truck is all stock. It even had the factory radio and door speakers. Only thing not stock is the paint and tire size, but it was like that when I bought it. The tires are slightly bigger than stock. I'm thinking that might play some role in the problem, but I'm not sure. I really don't know a great deal about automatics. I really prefer a manual tranny. Heh, although the way the tranny slips into neutral, it kinda feels like one! lol I would greatly appreciate any help any of y'all could offer me.

Message: how does the trans shift under lite throttle,
like if you took off from a stop normal, does it take 2 gear about 15mph and 3 gear about 25-35mph?or when you slow down can you feel it down shifting like your shifting it down yourself,
the kick down linkage maybe out of adjustment this will cause late hard shifts
try changing the trans filter and put in the fluid for chrysler plus3 or 4 [NOT THE DEXTRON]THE WRONG FLUID WILL MAKE THESE TRANS ACT WEIRD
the only things i can think of that would cause it to kick out of gear at a stop is the trans filter plugged, low fluid, throttle body, torque convertor
as for the oil pressure dropping off that sounds like its to do with the low idle, try putting it in neutral when you come to a stop to see if the idle and oil pressure stay up or try a new oil sending unit, these trucks are noted for this,or it may need a new oil pump, the pre mag did,nt have a sludge problem like the mag do
good luck and keep us inform

Message: It shifts the same whether I'm creepin or cruisin. I have noticed a lot of crap inside the engine when I take the oil filler cap off. All the internal parts i can see look very dirty and the ones I can touch with my finger are sludgy. But my quandry is that the engine only acts up when the tranny does, and I'm not sure if that's related, or purely coincidence. Thanks for the tips,Vern.

Message: may seem dumb but have you checked the transmission fluid level? needs to be checked in neutral...don't forget to set the parking brake.
have you checked 115 splice? that can cause problems with fuel delivery and appear to be a tranny problems. and can cause the stalling.
have you checked cat? that also can cause what appears to be tanny shifting problems.
PCV can also cause what appears to be shifting related problems.
some of these are long shots but possible. Very easy to check and cost nothing.

Message: I'll surely check...thanks for the help, Dan. I've been searching through the v6 forums, reading everything related to my problems, and the same things keep coming under suspicion, so i have an idea of what all needs to be checked. I just keep hoping I'll find a definite answer. Also, on a side note, does anyone know of any body kits complete or separate that will fit a '90 extended cab dakota? All I can find are roll pans.

Message: any excab from 87-96 will fit except the front bumper air dam,all side and rear are the same
theres two 93 5.2 SLT daks around here that have the side ground effects, both are the same except for color,so i,m guessing it,s a dealer or factory pkg, maybe a dealer can still get them or give you info on who made them
