I have two Q.'s right now, One is if anyone else is having troubles with their 3.9's eating up cats???... I have 90K miles on my truck now... my original cat was eaten around 65k. Then I replaced it with a high flow cat the just went bad as well... Which leads me to my second question... Does anybody have any good cats to look into?

Thanks Adam

If the cat fails you have a problem you need to look into. Have you had anyone do diagnostics on it? Sounds like you're running rich. Perhaps your o2 sensor is bad. The original cat on my old 95 lasted for around 120k or so miles.

Cat's don't just fail.

Depending on the year of your truck, dodge has a recall on cats.

I have a 97 3.9L Dakota and am on my 3rd Cat. The first one went out at about 70K and the Dodge Dealer replaced it under warranty. The new one lasted 50K and it too went bad. This time I went with an aftermarket one and have had no problems with it. and I currently have 195K on my truck and have had no engine codes for O2 sensors. As a matter of fact, I am still running the origional O2 sensors and still get 20mpg around town and 22 hwy.

The cat broke into chunks, one of which got jammed in the exhaust pipe at a 45 degree angle, effectively cutting in half the flow. Didn't hurt the mileage, but there was no power at all.
This happened around 300,000 miles and was caused by the backfiring caused by worn out valves.
I suggest you be sure the engine is good before forking over big bucks for the required, more expensive, catalytic converter our trucks use.

Sweetie,
Last I heard, nobodys oil lubricated valve seats.

In fact I had to replace the heads because they were severely cracked between the valves. I don't think replacing heads because they are unrepairable, and valves because they were so burned and warped you could see light all around some of them counts as nothing wrong was an oil related problem.

And your trusty steed has gone how many miles?

What the he11, does a broken catalytic convertor have to do with AMSOIL. "amsoil sucks" can't tell the difference beteen his exhaust pipe and a hole in the ground.

the recall on the cats is basicly like its warrenty... once your over your cats mileage warranty which is like 70-90k its out of warranty... if your melting down cats you gotta be runnin way rich.... bad valve seats where unburned gas to air mixture during compression stroke leaking past the valves and settleing in the exhuast can melt dwon a cat, or just plain out having bad plugs or wires or even a low compression where your not getting a good complete burn will cause it to bad..... what you need to do is have your truck put on a emissions gas analizer where it tests your exhuast output out the tailpipe and that should tell ya how rich your truck is runnin....

cylinder leakage test will tell you how your
motor is or a simple comp test the V6 motors
will run within 10 lbs some will run exactly
the same presure in every cyl this is do to the
rings and piston design mopar used in the mag
motors designed to run for ever without burning
oil and also less drag for better economy I have
seen motors with over 300,000 miles with perfict
compression nad still not using a drop of oil

additives will destroy a cat as will oil
comsumpsion valve seals or bad rings a leaky
pletium on intake rich air fuel a cat should
run 100,000 miles if your going threw them like
water over a water fall look elswere for the
problem its not the cat

Also as Scott said raw gas being pumped into the
cat from a motor prob will destrot a cat very fast

o2 sensors I have seen them go out in as little as
5,000 miles and have seen them run over 250,000
miles just replacing the cat with a new o2 may
not be the answer

I have 3 cats on my 01 the parts places that have direct fit catco's say they don't carry anything but the cat w/ only one on it. I bought one not knowing all 01's didn't have 3. It looks like it will bolt right on but there is only spots for 2 O2 sesnors and mine has 3. Is mine a crazy truck - can I just not put one of the O2's in. Why did they put 3 cats on some trucks?
Help

sounds like a california smog truck

you can run an o2 simulator on the post cat o2's
but the pre cat o2 must be there to controll air
fuel ratio

They will still pass emisions testing running
the sims the post cat o2s basicly tell the comp
if the cat is operating eficiently

The fastman and KRC have the o2 simulaters that
you can use and run 1 cat

Just replaced muffler and cat, old cat sounded like it had rocks in it. Next week replacing OE O2 sensor because it's probably what caused the cat to fail in the first place. Bro sez when O2 sensor fails the computer defaults to high/rich setting, which eats cats alive...
