I have a 2001 v6 quadcab. In the city I have been averaging 11.5 mpg. Just took a 250 mile all highway trip. On the 125 miles up there I got 20.3 heading north. On the 125 miles back I only got 16.2 going south. Cruise was used the whole time both ways. Why is my mileage fluctuating so bad ?

first of all where was your trip from point a to point b..... cause if one direction was down hill and the other is up hill then theres your answer..... cause i can leave my house here in baltimore and hit ocean city md within a half tank of gas..... but on the way back it takes almost 3/4 of a tank cause its an up hill drive...

Good point. I live in Texas. The 20.3 came when heading uphill (North) . The 16.2 came while heading downhill (SOUTH).

In Texas, a head wind, tail wind or side wind can really affect mileage. any of those factors involved??

Are you measuring mpg by filling the tank and dividing actual usage by miles? Or guessing from the gauge reading?

well going off the gauge is kinda hard..... knowing what your tank holds pending if you got that actual amount in that tank your only getting a guesstimiate of what your MPG is.... if you know for sure you got 22 gallons or whatever it holds then you estimates are to the point...

I have similar scenarios. I drive all city, sometimes i get 13 mpg, sometimes 18. I drive the same 15 miles to work each week and some more city driving and its weird how much it fluctuates.

Keeping shifting between 2,000 and 2,500 RPM seems to increase gas milage instead of shifting earlier, say at 1500

My car gets the best gas milage staying at 1900-2000 RPM, for both higway driving and shifting gears in the city.

THe 20.2 came while going north and driving into the wind. I check MPG by filling the tank all the way up to the top of the filler tube, drive it til 1/4 full and fill it back up to the top of the filler tube again. I also have the computer inside that shows mpg. Believe it or not, everytime I have compared it to the manual way it has been within .5 mpg.

bullet,
I just returned from hauling 1100 lbs from San Jose to LA.
I topped off in Gilroy (yes, the Garlic Capitol of the World) and refilled in Van Nuys. Returning, I topped in Bakersfield and finished in Concord, East of Oakland.

Going:
68MPH on cruise, A/C.....21.4 MPG
Coming:
78MPH on cruise, A/C.....17.6 MPG

As I recall, the I-5 wind was in my face returning. My truck gets it's best mileage around 65 and with a load. Something about the adaptive transmission, I suppose.

When I had a DeVille, with the trip mileage; I never reset it and ended up with grand overall mileage. A larger average is more accurate, I think.
