Subject: help w/caliper removal, 98 dak v6 IP: Logged
Message: I've got a 98 dakota, single cab, 3.9 L V6. I need to replace the brake pads but can't find the proper sized allen wrench to remove the calipers. Any ideas? It's between a 1/4 and 5/16 and a #6 metric is too small. Maybe a 9/32? The 1/4 fits in but slips when any pressure is applied. I'm having troubles finding resources about the actual size. Please let me know what it is. Thanks, Greg Thomas

Message: I need a real response. Thanks though. My Father in law has been a mechanic forever and is going to help me tomorrow. But, i thought I would get the calipers off first (at least one side) so we'd be ready to go. But, no luck. So, thought I'd come here for some helpful advice. Anyway, I'm still looking for it.

Message: If I remember correctly, those bolts vary in size/type...especially if the calipers have been replaced before. I replaced my calipers a while back with some rebuilt ones from Advance Auto Parts and one caliper used a torx bolt and one used an allen head (I did a lil swapping and used either two torx or two allen heads). Can't remember the size of the allen head bolts off the top of my head though.

Message: Stock mine were all 7mm allen. When I picked up a rebuilt one at Advance it had one 7mm allen, and one 10mm hex.
Thats on a 98, reg cab, V6

Message: DONE! I went to Oreilleys this morning and they looked it up, a 7mm metric allen wrench. So, I got the driver side done, went to the passenger side and ...... whoever replaced the pads previously had replaced the 7mm allen wrench bolts with standard 10mm bolts. Boy, that was fun. Thanks for all the help gentlemen. I appreciate it. Greg
