Why?
1. It'll be done right.
2. It'll be under warranty.

Message: I talked to a local transmission shop once about my old 95. I considered having it rebuilt and even a few upgrades. I asked about the bands, he said they should not have to be adjusted and said he would not do it. This was a local independent guy, not a national change.
I don't think he was giving me any crap, we talked about 30-35 minutes on transmissions and he even told me some of the tricks people do to "sway" consumers to have work done that may not be needed but is "recommended". We even went on a test drive. Some shops never do that. Everytime I take a vehicle in for any service, I always record the milage when I drop it off and pick it up. I've had some places mis-record that info on the workorder and go on little trips in my vehicles.
Just some food for though.

Message: Sorry shatto, but I disagree with both your points.
I've had shops screw-up more than they fixed.
That's why I do 98% of my own work.
And most of their warranties are crap too.
Do you want the same idiot who did the faulty work the first time, to work on it again, and again?
Not me.

Message: bridges,
Question #1. should have been; Bridges, why do you want to adjust the bands?
My transmission guy told me they used to need to do it frequently, but modern transmissions don't often need to be touched.
At the time he was adjusting the bands on my 3.9 automatic that had 400,000 miles without the bands being touched.

Message: The transmission bands ABSOLUTELY need adjusting!
This is because as they grip the planetary drums in the transmission to give you all the forward and reverse functions you need and love, some of the friction material normally wears off: and the bands grip loosens...
Thus, an adjustment at regular intervals or anytime the pan is dropped is in order...
I would say neglect like "no fluid and filter changes" and "no band adjustments" is what causes people to start wondering why their fluid is brown and transmission is slipping...
Then they want to fix it by pouring in a magic "mechanic in a bottle" syrup...

Message: I have been working on this truck for over a year
now and I finally got it running. I have had hell putting this truck together. Did a filter change and road test but the shifting was slugglish and I would only hear up to 3rd sometimes. Did the adjustment it was much better but if i accelerate to fast it would rev loud with reduce pull. Let off the gas it would shift.Reading the manual I seen that they had band adjustment thinking this would help or try tweaking the rod again.
I want the transmission to pull at its best because I have a 19ft. boat that I ususally go about 90 miles one way to fish. So all the info given is a plus. By the way it a 89 SB with a V6.
By the way what shift kit is recommended for this tranny...

Message: bridges,
I figured it out! You are supposed to drive it, not work on it.
It would be interesting to know why all the work.
If you are concerned, it wouldn't hurt to install a transmission cooler. There is acres of room under the bed to do it.
Refer back to my priors, I'm pretty sure having bands too tight will go more harm than good.
You might take a look at www.HowStuffWorks.com. you may find more info there.

Message: You are welcome, for the info.
I presume you used the transmission from the 4 with the 6. You might check if it is rated for the added power. I am curious to know.
Did you check to see the computer can handle the different engine?
You should have no problem if you drive smoothly; you don't have extreme weight nor distance, unless you Trout fish way back in the mountains like Chuck Yeager.

Make sure you have the right amount of tranny fluid. You should check it in neutral on a flat surface with the parking brake on. Do not check it in park, you will not be at the proper tranny fluid level!! Many people do not realize it must be checked in neutral.

Message: Back to the subject of band adjustments... They are necessary.
My buddy's 2000 Dakota R/T (46RE) (104K miles) was shifting horribly into 2nd gear (for quite some time). He had the fluid flushed - still slippy/long/sloppy shift to 2nd. Took it to the dealer and had them look at it. They flushed the tranny (another time) and it still shifted like crap.
Every other aspect of the tranny was working without any concern. I did a little reading in my Dakota FSM and figured out (quite easily) that the front band was most certainly the issue and decided to perform the adjustment.
This past Monday I crawled under the truck and adjusted as the FSM dictates. We took it for a road test. Guess what? It now shifts like it is supposed to shift.
I find it amazing that the DCX "technicians" couldn't recognize the need for this simple fix and perform it.
So, band adjustments (the front one especially) are a necessary maintenance item for the 42/44/46RE trannies.
The front band is used on every engagement of 2nd gear. Friction material is going to be worn away quite reularly and therefore the band opening gets larger through time. Adjusting it closes the opening down to the expected operating clearance.

Message: Fellas, bought the truck to the Local shop and asked about the band adjustment and he said that was not necessary...So I called today to see if he did their 21 point free check and guess what he stated he could not figure out how to run the test since I am using a floor shifter instead of the column. He will call back tomorrow to let me know if he can run the test... Can you believe a large chain having a simple issue like that. Nothing has changed with the transmission except the linkage...I think if they can not do anything with it I'll do the adjustment myself..
