Message: NEW TO BOARD. I'VE BEEN TRYING TO GET BETTER FUEL MILEAGE FROM MY TRUCK. ONLY GETTING 12-12.5 MPG CITY DRIVING LIKE A GRANNY. 18 MPG HIGHWAY. SWAPPED TO A V8 THROTTLE BODY, AND THAT ONLY HELPED POWER ABOVE 3000 RPM. MY CHAIN SLAPS AT IDLE, WILL THIS AFFECT TIMING ENOUGH TO KILL MY FUEL ECONO? I READ ON ANOTHER DODGE V6 SITE THERE WAS A MOPAR BULLETIN TO REPLACE WITH A DOUBLE SET. ANY ONE HAVE PART NUMBERS???

Message: im not sure on that bullentin for useing a double set timing chain setup and i really dont think there would be room for that... unless you mean a double roller timing chain which is stronger then OE and should be sufficient room under the timing cover.... i have alldata where i work at... i'll check to see if has a mopar TSB about it and i'll post back tomorrow on here if there is any info.... but i do believe they have an updated tensioner to help out with the timing chain slap problem.... but also to answer your question yes it would effect your gas mileage and performance but it would have to have an awful amount of slack to cause that problem....

Message: Yes, you can fit a double roller timing chain set in there, I have one in mine. I can't remember the part number from crane cam though.
If it doesn't fit, you're using the wrong hammer!

Message: Just remember that the timing chains are the same on the 5.2 and the 3.9.

Message: yeah the timing chains are the same cause the 3.9 is just 2 cylinder short version of the 5.2... my alldata didnt have a TSB unless i read past it and didnt see it.... but you can use on of the above mentioned timing chains in place just pends on your picking of which manufacture...

Message: I bought the Cloyes double roller for my '98 V6, and I got the tensioner from the dealer. My '98 makes a "slap" sound at idle too. I am sure that it is not the timing chain because when I went to replace the old one, I found that the chain was already a double roller with a tensioner. It didn't seem "loose" or damaged. I probably could have gotten away with leaving it on there, but I bought the truck used at 125,000 miles and I didnt want to take any chances, so I replaced them anyways. Even after the change, it still sounds the same. It sounds like my valve are rattling.

Message: RELF: could the slapping sound u are hearing possibly be the timing chain slapping against the tensioner? I've read other posts where people have left the tensioner off. Since you have already upgraded to a double roller, is the tensioner really necessary?

Message: The tensioner has a delrin (plastic) shoe that rides against the chain. The shoe is pressed pretty tight against the chain, I don't think the chain has any "slap room".
Is the tensioner really necessary?
I think so. I read in other posts that the bore spacing between the crank and the cam have been reduced by Chrysler, thus giving a little more slop in the chain. The two gears and chain were still pretty tight during installation. Larry has the instructions for installing the chain with the tensioner on the home page of dodgedakotas.com

Message: RELF: I INITALLY HAD A SEVERE SLAP AT IDLE, AND FOUND THE MAJORITY OF NOISE COMING FROM THE SERPENTINE BELT TENSIONER. I REPLACED THAT BUT STILL HAVE ANOTHER NOISE AT IDLE. GOING TO REPLACE THE CHAIN, SPROCKETS AND WATER PUMP AS SOON AS I HAVE THE CASH.

Message: BONES, I replaced my water pump a few months before I did the timing chain and I noticed the timing chain cover is also the back side of the water pump. Well, the water pump part was chewed up by corrosion but it seemed okay to not change it out right away. Then when I decided to change my timing chain I went on car-part.com and found a local junk yard who had a cover that was in great condition. I cleaned it up then I painted the timing mark area with white spray paint, then painted the lines and numbers black. While I was at it, I painted the TDC mark on the vibration dampner white, so it is easier to line up the TDC to check injector synchronization.
After all that, I still have a rattling type noise at idle, in gear. If I shift into park, the rattle goes away. Maybe there's something up with my tranny?
