Subject: Rear Axle Question

Hi,
I have an 04 dakota (3.7 L). The serivce manual recommends changing the rear axle fluid every 15,000 miles! I was wondering if anybody does this. This seems quite often!! I have 30,000, and haven't changed it yet. I'm thinking about chaninging it now, however, I got underneath it and can't find the drain plug, and refill area. Can you help? Thanks

there is no drain plug in the rear axle housings.... in order to drain the gear oil you have to pull the cover off.... once ya pull the cover off you need to clean it off completely and remove any gasket material thats left behind on the cover and the housing so that when you go to put it back on the silicon has a clean oil free surface to grab and seal too.... make sure the housing is clean and empty of any oil that might get in the way of resealing... place cover back on and make sure all bolts tight.... on the side of the housing you'll see a plug or the cover its self will have a rubber plug in it that you remove in order to refill.... if the plug is on the side of the housing take a rachet with a 3/8 3inch extension and use that in the square opening of the plug to remove the plug....
