Subject: 4.10 gears Highway mpg IP: Logged
Message: I just completed my first 1,087 highway miles with my new 4.10 gears. At 65mph without air conditioning I go 20.35mpg. I was averaging about 20.5 to 21mpg. so not too much of a loss.
I'll start towing in June.
I changed from 3.55 to increase my towing ability. For city driving I got 16mpg.
This was all city driving. I was getting about 16.5 mpg with the 3.55 gears. The truck gets moving much faster and I find myself driving faster also.
I'm going on a long highway trip soon - I compute that mpg and post it here.
It cost 1,200 to to change the gears.

Message: Sounds like money well spent. How would you say the performance is now? Is it a considerable change from the 3:55's? I am thinking of going to 3:92's but maybe now 4:10 would be better all around.

Message: I would go with the 4.10. The truck gets moving faster and there is less gear changing on highway speeds with cruze control on.

Message: Will the sensor in the diff have to be changed to get the speedo to read right with the gear swap or is it alright as is or how do you get the speedo calibrated.

Message: No need to recalibrate speedo.
The speed is measured after the drive shaft. So unless you change tire size it should still show the same speed.
As for Dex mpg numbers there accurate.
My 2002 4x4 auto quad cab was getting 12-13 mpg town and a solid 13 mpg highway with 3.55s. The 4.10s yielded me a solid 13 mpg town and a solid 13 mpgs highway.
Im amazed at the mileage Dex is getting.
At this rate ill be firing up the old 1984 f250 7.5l v8 to save some gas money since it gets 12-15 mpg.

Message: Just Looking,
The only time I got your city mpg was during extreamly cold weather
I'd suggest a tune up; and see if you are carrying extra weight you don't need.

Message: Thank you Dex ill see what i can do about removing some weight, but if i recall its always had that mpg since new. Then again since new its always sputtered when you started it in all conditions and has a sound of misfire during accelerations in all rpms. No codes and its been tuned up 2,000 miles ago with no success.
Its been driving me nutz for the past 4 years. I havent been able to figure out whats causing it.
It has to be a sensor intermittently working and not triping a code.
