Message: I wouldn't worry about changing the bearings at all, maybe the seal, but not the bearings. This project should only take a couple of hours, but you can never tell what is going to happen, so it is best to start something like this on a weekend:) As for tips, make sure when you put the pump and pickup screen back in that the screen is not too close to the bottom of the pan. It should run somehwere around 7 inches from the machined gasket surface of the block to the bottom of the screen.
If it doesn't fit, you're using the wrong hammer!

Message: Joe M has a good question. I want to know why you want to change any of that stuff.
I recently did the job on my 98 3.9.
Go to page 6. Amsoil at 10 pounds.

Message: Think your getting carried away with your low oil pressure problem. Find the problem and fix it but not every possibility there is. And your not going to do this in no 2 hours either. Dealer shop with all the exact equipment/tools is going to spend a good day on it provided your planing on cleaning the crank case/ oil pan put good. And doesn't sound like your a pro at this either. Not yet anyway.Oh. I would remove the distributor and stuff a rag in the hole or your going to screw it up for sure.

Message: Sorry Obio3, I was just taking the experience a buddy and I did recently with a 318. We replaced the pump, adjusted screen height 3 times (3 times includes dropping engine, starting, cussing about oil pressure, raising engine, adjusting screen, dropping engine, starting, etc) in about 2 and a half hours.

Message: NP cuz. Nothing to be sorry about . I.m well aware how important experance is to knowing the tricks and being able to do a job blindfolded. I just couldn't see inexperiance doing a serious job using a book and flyimng through a job. Not cutting him down at all. I have great respect for anyone willing to take on a major project. Hopefully he will let us know where the problem was.

Message: derek over look the ads the few on here try pushing
run what ever oil you like
dino or syn. changed every 3000 you will be fine
as for your pump
did you check it with a mechanical gauge to make sure it really is low oil pressure and not the sending unit?
if you did that and its low
ok just the pump/pick up screen/ pan gasket
is good
wouldnt worry about changing a bearing unless you have a knocking issue then in which case an entire rebuild would be in order

Message: DO NOT TRY THIS! that sucked! lifted the engine until the tranny was touching the floor board. had to take off the manifolds, distributer, intake, motor mounts, acceleration cable, and STILL COULDN'T WEDGE THE OIL PAN OUT!!! so that was basically the longest, most frustrating oil change ever. couldn't even replace the gasket. so i talked a mechanic into using my parts and doing it for $250.00 tommorow morning. i don't know how the hell he's going to do it, but whatever. thx for the help guys!
I HATE YOU HAYNES REPAIR MANUAL AUTHOR!!

Message: ok..norcross automotive just called me to tell me that they're mechanic has been at it all day and hasn't got the pump out either. he has over 15 years experience too. he's saying that the transmission is not stock and thats why they're going to charge me more. I SAY BULLCRAP! it's just one heck of a job to change that oil pump. he just underestimated it when he quoted me.

Message: derek,
Sorry you couldn't read Amsoil at 10 lbs. It was all there.
I went throught he same thing, with my mechanic too!
We were able to remove the pump by snaking it past the pan. The gasket is rubber and shouldn't need replacing. Mine didn't after 500,000 miles.
If you aren't finished, you might think about a high volume pump. I went back to stock, based on advice from here and other mechanics, but my pressure is lower than I'd like. On the other hand, it got you here with what the engineers thought was right.
Just think of the stories you'll be able to tell when this is over!
