Subject: Odd Performance Problem (TPS??)
IP: Logged

Message:
Greetings,

1994 3.9V6, all stock, 2wd 5spd.

I have an odd performance problem that started yesterday. The truck (for the most part) idles smoothly at 600RPM. It also runs very well for the first 1/2 inch or so of gas pedal travel. However, after that, the engine backfires through the throttle body, has no power whatsoever, and almost stalls out.

At first, I thought this was a TPS issue - I had a 1997 Neon that did the same thing, and it required a new TPS. So I took a multimeter and measured the TPS resistance, and depending on where the throttle was, it was .5 to 2.7 ohms, with a smooth progression of resistance (no dead spots).

What else should I be checking?

Ok, I should also note that it's been raining for two days... but the distributor's dry.

It's hell because it's hilly around here, and you can't climb hills without gas pedal travell... :)

A few more details I just remembered: When the truck is up to speed, the above does not occur and I get full power from all gas pedal travel (most of the time); so I'm fine if I can get going above 20 mph. It's just starting out that's the problem. So, it doesn't look like a fundamental problem like coil or dstributor that would limit power, b/c if it was I wouldn't get the power at any time.

In order for the engine to backfire through the TB, You need to have a valve open allowing a firing cylender to shoot ignited fuel into the intake. several ways this can happen. Worst would be a valve hanging up or stuck open.Broken valve spring. Not likely as a rule. Crossfire between plug wires or wires on wrong cylenders.Water in the dist cap. cracked dist cap or a carbin track on the inside or between posts on the outside top. If I was to guess without riding in the truck your most likely problem is plug wires. You don't mention checking for codes. Strange things cab happen on these new truck. Check codes befor you play with it.

So many problems .... So little time

Was the fuel pump - pressure was 0-20 PSI, should be 35-45 PSI. Replaced it and all is fine, except the gauge shows 1/8 tank when it's full...
