Message: I have a 90 3.9. I had taken off the muffler to reduce backpressure and make the truck sound more throaty. What I found was no matter where I set the timing there was a lot of backfire through the exhaust. The 3.9 needs some back pressure and the cat didn't seem to have enough. I then took the cat off and now I only use a muffler. The truck has noticibly more pep and it's quiet. It's so quiet that I've tried to start the truck when it was already running. The muffler I'm using is a universal fit type. It's a little smaller than OE.
As for sound... the 3.9 isn't all that loud without an exhaust. I ran mine for two days without a cat or muffler. I don't recommend running straight pipes due to lack of backpressure.

Message: theres a few of us here that can tell you other wise
and i am one of them
taking the "CAT" off results in loss of bottom end HP & TRQ.
if you gained by taking yours off then it was most likely clogged
(a high flow cat is the best way to go)
