Message: Dang, you're getting mileage like that out of a 500,000 mile engine and tranny AND with a payload? My engine/tranny has 210,000 and my mileage is around 14 MPG, with a leer shell hauling NO payload but my fat a$$. I just bored out a 42mm TB to a 46mm.
What size throttle body are you runnin'?

I average 19 mpg, but get 20-22 on the highway. Drove from MA to FL and back last winter with wife and baby, bed loaded to the very top of cap, averaged 20 mpg for the trip. Truck is ALL stock.

Message: FWIW and believe it or not I just got 17.8mpg. I decided to see what I would get if I was intentionally hard on the gas. I've tried taking it easy many times and kept getting disappointing results. On this last tank I couldn't have driven any more aggressively without begging for a ticket. Highway speeds were generally 10-20 mph over the speed limit and many times I accelerated at wot.
I'm not suggesting that anyone drive like that only that taking it easy has been disappointing from a gas conserving point for me.
bludak, I'm anything but disappointed in my SC. I especially like the change in the shift pattern. The torque convertor doesn't lock up until after it goes into OD. Lock up is about 52 mph and the shift point moves up to 5200 rpm at wot. I haven't tried the tow program and have only used the 92 octane program a couple of times. I just don't need it for daily driving. If I think that I'm going to do a little cruising on the weekend I plan accordingly and keep the tank near empty. My guess is that towing program advances the timing at lower rpm's. As some people have suggested, that may be good for drag racing, but I don't know what that would do for your top end. If that was really better, what would you need a "Performance Program" for?

Message: Larry and Bob, I am pretty conservative when it comes to driving. I'm not a leadfoot, but I'm not an old lady, either. Here's my mods:
Drop-in K&N
Machined 46mm TB
TPS set @ .7 volts
Machined intake man. 1/2" off runners,
gasket matched, opened up inj. bosses.
1/4" plenum plate
Carsound cat. conv.
new O2 sensors (last summer)
Gibson side swept cat back exhaust
Autolite 3924s
Mobil 1 10W-30
Mopar wires
Brass cap & rotor
CPS mod. (did it yesterday)
Injector sync. +2 maybe.
All this on a 1998 Dakota sport 4X4 Club Cab automatic. Toyo 30 X 9.50 R15 tires. Leer camper shell. Not sure about the gears.
Thanks

Message: Well, I just installed my Superchips program and the 87 octane setting really doesn't change anything so on to the perf/towing setting. I had a little over 1/2 tank of regular 87 octane fuel in it so I went to the local airport and filled a 25 liter can with 100 octane av gas and poured it in. That pretty much topped it up. I installed the perf/towing program and there is a great increase in low end torque and it stays right up there throughout the rpm range. Also I was able to pass with ease with a very strong headwind as I went home last night. I was never able to get the truck over 100 mph but it attained 110 plus there was more left in it. It still shifted at around 5000 rpm but there is still a little adjustment left on the TV cable and I am not sure if increasing that adjustment will change the shift point. No pinging at all!! I also have the Crank sensor mod which may have added a couple degrees of timing also to begin with. I am real happy with the setting that I have it at right now and will try the Performance setting after I empty this tank of fuel and put in straight 91 octane so there is no guessing about the octane rating with the av gas. I also was able to get the speedo to read correctly with the bigger 275/60/15 tire on the rear. All in all, I am glad I spent the cash on this, it really compliments the 1.7 Harland sharps, 46 mm Fastman TB, ported intake and relocated IAT.

Message: It doesn't sound like you gave the 87 much of a chance. True you don't get a big kick in the pants but for daily driving it is hard to beat. If you don't mind running premium fuel 24/7/365 then by all means run performance/tow programs.
I too have left in the CPS mod and have occasionally dumped in a couple of gallons of avgas on hot summer days when I was getting a bit of pinging.

Message: What are you guys doin? I got a 50 mile commute, uphill both ways, in tornadic headwinds and 10 feet of snow, and I get 28 MPG at WOT and 80 MPH...
Seriously, tho, remind me to never buy a truck with an automatic. I have a '94, 3.92 gears, 5-speed stick, 145k on the clock, new fuel pump, and I always get a consistent 21 mpg. (This is driving 110 miles per day, where 30 mi is highway at ~75 mph, 30 mi is city at ~35 mph, and 50 mi is 60 mph... measured on the same gas pump at the same gas station every time...)

If it doesn't fit, you're using the wrong hammer!

Message: I used to get 17-18 combined on my old 95 CC 4x4 3.9L auto 3.55 with tonneau. I used mobil 1 synthetic oil, ATF +3 or ATF+4 transmissions fluid, 10" edelbrock air hat with K&N Filter, autolight plugs and wires. On highway I got up to 25 MPG depending on speed. Traded it in with 167k miles. Original motor and transmission. All other parts were stock.
