Picked up 1200 lbs at Concord,CA. Delivered in Modesto. 84.4 miles. Drove empty to Livermore and gassed up.
65 MPH on cruise, A/C on.
124 miles, 5.380 gallons, 23 Miles Per Gallon.
Right!
Since; May 22 (Above):
May 23...299mi....15.516gl.......19.3mpg
May 24...151mi.....8.135gl.......18.6mpg
May 25...220mi....12.032gl.......18.3mpg
May 26...178mi.....9.829gl.......18.1mpg
The 23 mpg represents 99% highway driving.
More important, I only trust the averages. I always add a little after the pump clicks off, when filling up. I've had times when I did this, drove away and discovered the needle on 3/4.
Craig,
The reason I did all this is so you can see how I calculate the city driving;
I am a courier, driving in the greater San Francisco Bay Area. Even the freeway driving is in traffic going to city streets, etc.
Scott C.
The way you drive is why God made Cruise Control.
Pretend you are old.
Think of all those people risking a speeding ticket, but not you.

I Didnt think this was that bad, i want to get a K&N air filter and sythetic fluids, this was with the AC on too. I also have a Fiberglass lorider topper on it its a 3.9 liter, is this bad or average, how can i improve it?

Message: so i took a trip of ~1300 miles last week and decided to do some unofficial testing..here's the breakdown...
2000 CC 3.9
On the way there..36psi(cold), ~200lbs of randomness in the bed...cruise off most of the time, 70-75mph avg., AC off(it was like 55-60ambient)
fuel stop1: 15.4 gal/310miles = ~19.5
stop 2: 14.6gal/ 294miles = ~20.1
(stop 1 used Iowa's great 89corn gas, #2 was 'normal' 89)
return trip
39psi cold, cruise set to 65, AC off, ~400lbs in the bed
stop1: 16.1gal/374 = ~23.2
stop 2: 15.2gal/383 = ~25.2
both of these were 'normal' 89....
conclusion? slightly higher tire pressure and slowing down a bit added 15-20%....
oddly enough, every time i filled up, the gauge didn't even move for the first 100-120miles, then it dropped like a rock.

Message: IowaSQ,
You gave yourself away, telling about the gas gauge waiting until most of the gas was gone then dropping like a rock. Chevys do that.
Used to , anyway.
Matt G,
It would help to know where you get all this great MPG.
Example; I rented a loaded 4X4 Surban in New Mexico, and it got well over 23MPG at 70MPH. I asked and nobody here in California gets anywhere near that. I think it's the gas.

Message: Hey, Palmier which type of gallons did you use? One imperial gallon is 1.2009 US gallons. Most of these guys would be using US gallons.
I'm from Manitoba, i drive a little bit of gravel, city and highway and i get 14mpg. I'm definately not a granny driver.

Message: My old 95 SLT CC 4x4 3.9L auto got up to 25 on highway. The 25mpg was driving 60mph (speed limit 55) up US 31 from indianapolis IN to south bend IN. I had a tonneau cover on it.
When I traded it in at 167k miles i was getting 17-18mpg combined. all stock except edelbrock air hat, K&N filter and autolight plugs and wires.
I usually averaged just under 20 to just over 21 on long highway trips driving 70-75.

Message: Wind certainly makes a difference on a one-way trip. Round trip it averages out. Increased head wind is pretty much like increased speed. The increased head wind increases drag.

Message: Drove 121 miles, filled up with 5.3 gallons. Drove 139 miles, filled up with 6.1 gallons. Average gas milage is 22.8 mpg. That's with a custom exhaust, no a/c on, and driving 70 mph. I should mention the gas milage should be better than that on the highway. About 20 - 30 miles of the 260 miles was driving in town. Only cost me $120.00 for the cat, pipes, clamps, and muffler. I have much better performance and better gas milage. I was getting 17 - 19 mpg before. It'll only take me 4000 miles to pay for itself. No problem. I drive about 120 miles a day. So, that's like a little more than a month.
