Message: Hi I have a 93 3.9 Mag. I was wondering what can I do to improve hp and mpg? Im just a high school student so I cant do any big overhalls but what are some cheap effective upgrades? I know about cold air intake and all that, what about reprogramming? where could i get a programmer?
Thanks

Message: What is the mileage on your truck and what is it geared at? I can't tell you too much about chips (super and jet are the ones I hear about), but for HP/MPG, do the stuff you have heard of. (better wires, plugs, cap and rotor with brass buttons) You don't necessarily have to go CAI, just an 10-12" open filter element (get one a advance/auto zone for about $25). Try a different, better flowing exhaust (including high flow cat) from magnaflow, flowmaster, etc. Go to a salvage yard and pick up a V8 throttle body for about $20-$30. If you feel into it, bypass the EGR system (blank off exhaust manifold port, piping, etc) if you get a new/used TB. There are LOTS of other things you can do....just don't fall for the tornado fuel savers, magnet fuel induction mods, throttle body spacers, you get the hint. Not only are some/most of these things a scam, but the ones that actually work on other vehicles won't work with our's because of our intake manifold design.
If it doesn't fit, you're using the wrong hammer!

Message: Thanks cuzindoug
I just put in a new rotor, cap and plugs, Il have to try wires. Ive been thinking about leaving the stock exhaust but just "replacing" the muffler with a strait tube. The milage is about 155,500. Ive thought about getting a V8 tb but heard it was hard to convert to fit th V6 intake or some thing. Does blocking the erg valve really help?
Thanks

Message: The TB is one of the easiest mods you can do, The TBs are the same in every aspect but the throttle opening (V6 is 42mm and V8 is 50mm). 4 bolts (1/2 inch socket) and the IAC, TPS, and MAP sensors(2 torx type bolts each) and viola!!! Takes about 20 minutes tops. As for the EGR, yes it can help. All the EGR does is recirculates some of the exhaust flow back through the intake to be "burnt" again. It is suppose to reduce emissions... If you do block the EGR and do plan on getting a V8 TB, then make sure you get one (TB) from a 96 or newer dakota/ram van/ram 5.2. After 95, Dodge went away from the EGR, and the TB stopped getting certain EGR ports drilled in them.

Message: How would i polish it to increase air flow? would that help or hurt preformance with the little V6? Dont you have to adjust the cabble to the tb?
Thanks

Message: I agree with everything other than the egr... The last thing you want to do is block the egr off... The purpose of the egr or "exhaust gas recirculation" is to reduce NOX or "oxides of nitrogen" and then you have the side effects of the egr system which is better fuel economy... You block off the egr and you'll lose up to 5 mpg out on the highway... Besides the egr system shuts down on full throttle or heavy load demands and is only used or functioning durring cruise or off-idle operation...
Oh and the EGR system doesn't reburn exhaust, it mearly takes up space and cools down combustion temps to below the Nox producing temp of 2500 degrees farenheit... So go ahead and do everything other than the egr... I might also recommend from my own experiances, that if you want better fuel effiency and power, that you switch everything over to synthetic fluids; such as the engine, tranny and diffs... You should get around a 1 to 2 mpg increase from this alone...
