Message: Just bought a '95 QC 4x4 V6 Auto w/ 97k miles. The engine is in good shape and has good power at lower mph but is severely lacking power when on the highway at 60-70mph. On a hill, somtimes I have to nearly floor it to get it to shift from overdrive. Other times I don't have to put my foot so much into it but the tranny feels like it is upshifting 2 gears (but it isn't 2nd gear because my RPMs don't go much above 3000).
Probably need to replace the tranny fluid and filter but what else should I look at?

Message: Got a 98 dakota. today I notice pulling away from a traffic light from a dead stop, trans wouldn't catch right off, then got to my driveway (incline) and same thing happened. When enjine cooled down, when back out and started it up, backed down the driveway, and started back up with no problem--no leakage, fluid at proper level, and clean, has 40k on it. Any idea ??

Drain fluid, remove pan, filter and check that solenoid pack is tightly screwed to valve body. If it is, replace the solenoid pack. Mine did the same thing, as well as not disengaging lockup on stops. Completely cured by replacing solenoid pack. But it was also loose on the valve body, so tightening the hold-down screws might have been enough to fix it.

SOME THINGS CHANGE
Today's transmission pretty much serves the same function as before, but now there are more components. In addition to clutch packs, plates, gears, valves, and bearings, we have solenoids and sensors, and a lot more orifices where contaminants can cause blockages that interfere with performance.
One thing that has not changed is that transmission fluid remains a necessary "component" of the transmission. And fluid quality is more important than ever before.
Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) not only cools working parts and reduces wear, it also serves as a hydraulic fluid to actuate valves used for shifting. An argument can be made that no other component is as important as your ATF.
WHAT ELSE IS NEW?
The requirements placed on ATF have changed in other ways as well. Because of the aerodynamics in many of today's vehicles, the overall drivetrain is simply not getting cooled off the way it used to. For this reason, transmissions run hotter, so hot in fact that interior carpets have caught fire during some tests where SUVs were pulling heavy loads.
Furthermore, because of the sensors and solenoids, fluid cleanliness has become an absolute requirement. Debris and gunk in the transmission fluid will cause interference and literally do damage in ways that less sophisticated transmissions never experienced before.
The biggest change in today's transmissions comes from the fact that the shifting is no longer driven by mechanical action, but rather is controlled by electromechanical hydraulic solenoids (valves).
The result is that the smallest amount of debris can clog or restrict solenoids causing them to not work properly or even burn out.
In the past it was the clutches themselves that physically wore out, but now the tranny can fail prematurely while everything else is fine because clutches aren't getting the correct pressure to keep from slipping. Or even worse, the computer brain signals instructions for two competing gears to engage at the same time. For this reason you need a high quality Synthetic ATF that has a better additive package to hold material in suspension. And by reducing friction this synthetic fluid reduces wear so that less wear material is left floating around in there.

Message: Have an 89 4x4 Dakota that makes gear grinding noise after a drive. I think it could be the overdrive unit. I had the tran done in 99 buy pro trans. warranty is over, however i have stopped driving it since, realizing it could cause more damage. I don't play in the mud and ease off the pedal when I use the od.I take excellent care of my girl, FYI it has an A500 four speed overdrive with lock up tork so if anyone can advise me please email me at thedrilldoctor@hotmail.com

Message: My 1998 Tanny 65,000(rebuild) 155,000 OM on truck. My truck does not want to shift out of 2nd and 3rd have to let up on the gas to shift. They sould just recall all Dodge tannys from the yrs 98-01 they are all junk anyways.

Message: i just bought my 98 rt cc and the guy said that the person who had it before him had the tranny done at 75000 brand new one. i bought it with 88000 anyway that i could tell if they actually did put in a new one just to make sure he wasnt blowin smoke up my a$$. Shifts like a caddy now but sometimes when i get to a stop sign and then go to accelerate the engine revs and it like slams into gear i have had the truck for about two months now and it has only done it twice already changed the tranny fluid and filter should i just look into getting a full flush and maybe thatll cure it

Message: Im not sure i have a tranny problem or not, i was driving at about 35 (in a 25 lol) and slowed for a corner, accelerated after turning and the damn truck wouldn't go anywhere (like it was stuck in nuetral or something). So i set the e-brake (cause i'm on an incline) and then attempt to put it into park. As soon as i am trying to get the shifter on the column into park the motor starts grinding like its caught on something. But if i push it faster it still grinds but only a little bit.
Also i have a driveline disconnect because i wanted to tow it behind a motorhome and it slides in and out no prob.
In summary: 2001 Dodge Dakota 3.9 v6 in any gear its like its in nuetral, any ideas??? Thanks

Message: Try using one or two bottles of Lucas Transmission Slip Fix. You will have to remove about a quart or two of fluid, unless you are already low. Better yet do a fluid/ filter change and a Band/ Kickdown Cable adjustment. Also, check your throttle positions for specified alignment.
I used Lucas and did all the above (use ATF+4 or AMS synthetic fluid) the drain will not remove any fluid from your torque converter, so you may want to drain that, or do two changes with 200-500 miles in between (use cheap ATF+3 the first change). My truck wouldn't shift out of first at 92,000 miles until doing the above, and it has gotten me all the way to 170,000 on a '94 3.9 w/ 42re tranny (all original). Still get close to 16mpg.

Message: not too try an be an ass, but last time i checked a suzuki was not a dodge an a suzuki swift was definetlt not a dodge dakota. Although to me it sounds as thou your transmission is about fried and will need to be rebuilt/replaced. there's a few things to check first thou, like fluid level etc...

not all problems associated with the transmission are rebuilds. look around, ask for advice. If it pops back in gear after a period of time and works fine, maybe something is stuck. maybe something minor is your problem. josh90daks comment that it is a rebuild is the worst case scenario and costs quite a bit of money. that could be the case, but its worth it to get a second opinion or a third. sooner or later one will probably sound like they know what they are talking about. don't give up

Message: Have a 2001 dakota 4x4. The othe day I was shifting between 2h/ 4h and 4L After putting in 4L it stayed in nutral. Changed the part that shifts those gears and now all it does is sounds like its trying to change gears but only goes part way. It grinds and othe noises especially when you try to put it in park. Have to shut it off to stop it from grinding. Anyone have the answer

Message: I have a 1990 dodge dakota,I had the tranny rebuilt,installed it yesterday it ran good and shifted out great. Today I started it and moved it to another driveway , momentarly holding the brake then proceeding and nothing in any gear its like in neutral HELP!
