Subject: 3.9 Tranny Problems IP: Logged
Message: I have a guy working on my old 95 Dakota and he's replaced the freeze plugs, and to do so he had to drop the tranny. He says when he did so, a couple of "BB's" came out. When he put it all back together, he can't get tranny to shift in any gear. Now, the tranny slipped a little before (205k, used for towing boat etc...) but at least it drove. Any comments or ideas would really help. I just found this site looking for info, gonna have to join, I now own a 99 Dakota Sport. By the way it is a 2WD 95 w/ 3.9L. Thanks and hope to hear something soon!!

Message: DkLover,
Inside the guts of the tranny ( if you have dropped the pan ) there are little 'BBs' used to control pressure. Although you didn't state so in your post, thats where possibly those BBs came from. However, just unbolting the tranny from the engine wouldn't even come close to valve body. Were you there when he did it? Did he say anything that he did to the tranny besides just unbolting it?
Let me know and I can find a website that has downloadable diagrams for many automatic transmission. Just write a little more and I'll get back to ya.

Message: If your talking about a 5 speed tranny .... the "bb's" that fell out came from the throw-out bearing ..... the bearing might have fell apart and now it wont push on the pressure plate..... not allowing you to shift into any gear .....

Message: Ok, it is an automatic. I'm told he put the tranny on a jack, unbolted the tranny and all lines. PUlled it back and then he noticed the BBs on the floor. The shifter moves but does not engage the trans at all. Could it be possible the cooler lines are on backwards or any wiring problems that may cause this? It is full of fluid. Any diagrams or ideas would be great. Thanks for the info. it's nice to have a place for questions from people who know the trucks!
