Message: check with your local authorities. i know here in LA a rear bumper is not required on a pick up but don't get caught driving one without the front bumper.

Message: The plastic bumpers aren't really bumpers, they're just cosmetic covers to make things look pretty. The "real" bumpers are steel units underneath.

Message: You can fabricate a bumper behind the roll pan. My bumper doubles as trailer hitch which is hidden behind the license plate. Unfortunately each state and inspector may interpret the rules differently. Any state that allows after market bumpers should have rules in place. Check them out.

Depends on the vehicle. My wife's Camry has styrofoam coated with plastic - no steel at all. I found out when someone hit her and chopped the bumper off, and I carried it off the road.

Perhaps you could stencil "Screwuphead" on your tail gate, drive like you do now with your ball cap turned around backwards, stereo thumping 60hz rumble and you can meet more of your Blue Buddies.

Message: Some of the Dakota's came factory with the plastic roll pans. I think 97-99. I have one on my '01. (I know they don't hold up when rear ended at McDonald's drive thru!) On my second one now, in other words. I found a factory part number for the hitch that works with the roll pan, am going to order it for more support.
