Subject: Problem: 90 4wd auto - no overdrive IP: Logged
Message: I've had problems for some time with this OD situation. OD had worked intermittantly. Sometimes when I was driving the slightest drag on the engine would cause it to drop to 3rd. After a while it just stayed in 3rd. I have no overdrive. Thinking it's a solenoid. I found the OD solenoid inside the trans, but can't get the valve body out. The only thing keeping me from getting it is a shift assy. The assy. bolts to a rod on top of the trans, goes through the trans casing and attaches to the valve body. How do you separate them so I can remove the solenoid assy. The solenoid is the one with two coil packs. At least I hope it's the one I want to replace...
Any suggestions?

Message: Good luck. It's the park pawl rod that you need to remove. Supposedly you can drop the valve body and angle it to get the rod out. I couldn't budge it so I undid the C clip holding it to the valve body. Big mistake. Took 3 hours to reattach it. Didn't know I knew so many swears.
Check first to see if the solenoid pack is loose against the valve body. Three screws hold it on. If it's loose, fluid leakage around the pack will prevent OD and lockup.

Message: The control wires for the cruise and the OD switch are in the steering coloum and could be pinched and shorting out..

Message: check all your connections first a bad map or
throttle position sensor will also cause this
tps on the 90 center wire and to ground should be
1 to 1.25 volts go up as throttle is advanced and
always return to same low volts key on engine not
running and check
the o/d sol check with ohm meter should be 200 ohm
180 to 220 is normal
if all that is ok try some lube gard red it will
help sticky valves
here is another way to check this jack up rear
end with jack stands and there should be 12 volt
at the conector stick a pin in the other wire
run the vehicle about 30 now ground this wire
to force the shift if it shifts all is ok than
its not in the trans
this forced shift will not harm the trans its how
we check bot o/d and lockup to determine if its
electrical or mech in the trans but your cruse
shutting down also tells me its most likly not
in the trans

Message: The connector for the o/d sol has three pins/wires. Which one do I ground to kick o/d on?
Isn't the o/d switch on the dash the same wire as the one I'm supposed to ground? Can't I just short the feed side to ground? That is, of, course, the wire isn't broken from the sol to the switch.
