Subject: ring and pinions gears IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2001 v6 dodge dakota 4wd extended cab that has a 3:92 rear end. Is it possible to put a higher set of gears in this truck to improve fuel economy? Will the truck still have enough power to take off reasonably well?
any help would be appreciated.
thanks,
ron

Message: Ron,
Your truck gearing is right in the middle of the 3.55 and the 4.10. I just changed from 3.55 to 4.10 to improve my towing. It cost me $1,300 all in.
I do not think you will get anywhere near a MPG improvement to justify the cost. Spend the money on a full tune up, wheel alignment and a lighter foot.

Message: You can always go to a salvage yard and pick up another set of gears. I had a buddy go and pick up a set for $50...of course his set was geared at 3.55. They were in excellent shape as well. Look around, you would be surprised what you can find.

Message: with a v6, I'm thinking you go to 3.55 gears your engine will be working harder under all conditions except down hill. 3.92 gears are the best setup you can have. Either way I don't think you will see little to no differance in fuel milage. You will notice the power lose for sure.
So many problems .... So little time

Message: Don't change them Ron, you will notice too much power loss especially with a 4 X 4. I have 3.55's now in my 2wd and am looking to put 3.9's in it. You would have to go to 2.94 or 3.23 to make any milage difference that would be noticeable then you would not be happy with the power. The V6 would have to work too hard with such high gears and the milage may become worse possibly, unless you drove like grandma.

Message: Hhheeyyyyy, I have stock 2.94 in my truck, I routinely drive 70+ and 60% of the time I "get in it". I still get an average of 21-23 MPG. (19-21 City 24-26 Hwy) I would probably have better grunt with lower gearing, but I am satisfied:)

Message: Sorry, cuzindoug, I am only comparing it to what I have now, and in a good wind, the 3.55's really make it hard to push. I could only imagine what 2.94's would be like. If you had 3.55 to begin with then went to 2.94 you would see what I mean. Your truck must be a real dog off the line.

Message: Surprisingly enough, no it's not. I definitely have alot of zip, I can roast the tires(not popping clutch)wether I am coming from a standstill or traveling down the road. I would love to drop a set of 4.10's in it, but I don't want to sacrifice my mileage!!
91dak, the whining sound is probably the backlass not set properly. It also sounds like you have a set of ring gears that were made for a different tire size than what you have on it now. It won't hurt your tranny or engine. Really, the only way to correct the speed thing, is to get a set of gears made for your tire size, or get bigger tires:)
The number is like this. The higher the number the greater the torque, the lower the economical speed. The lower the number, the torque decreases, but you can go at higher speed and still get better fuel economy.
