Subject: Rear End Noise
IP: Logged

Message:
98 CC Auto 2WD with 97,500 miles. I have a harmonic noise coming from the rear end during acceleration or deceleration. Have called several transmission shops and the rebuild cost is running from $900 to $1200 for ring gear, pinion, bearings, seals, fluid and labor. They all say the same thing: Dodge rear ends in the 97-99 era all end up making that noise eventually. Anybody out there have any experience with this problem? Larry? Appreciate any feedback.
Pat

change the fluid and see if the noise goes away. also make sure if you have limited slip so you don't forget the additive. could also be your u-joints.

Going to change the fluid this weekend and see what happens. Vehicle is stock without positraction. Any fluid recommendations other than what Dodge says to use?

All dodges seem to have a noise there. I drove one of the first Power Wagons, it had it. My Military 3/4 Ton had it. My 98 Dakota has it.
The differental of my Dakota eventually got so loud people in closed up cars on the freeway were looking. Got a new limited slip, which was cheaper, at around 300,000 miles. Maybe it lasted that long because I used Amsoil. If you go limited slip, you won't need additives with Amsoil.

Thanks for all the input. I pulled the cover and looked at the gears and they look just like the Dodge Maintenance Manual pictures for a good gear mesh. There was no metal or sparkly stuff in the fluid I drained. There was a little dark sludge like stuff in the bottom. I am trying Valvoline 85w140 just for the hell of it and see what happens. So far I've only put about 10 miles on it for a leak check and trial run and it seems the harmonic noise has changed somewhat, but not gone away. At this point, since I've seen what the gears look like, I'm really hesitant to spend a bunch of bucks for a replacement set of gears and bearings and the labor. I'll see if I can get used to the noise(or, more accurately, if my wife can stand the noise).

Again, guys, thanks for the input!!

every dam time you post or make a reply its the same phuckin sh*t
sooner or later everyone here will start waking up

Pat just stick with a weight the owners manual calls for if your still getting noise
try the redline shock proof
it honestly does quiet it down some
however just dont use it to mask a problem
if the noise is that bad you should have it looked into

The howl noise in the old power wagons came from the trany, not the rear end. It was the gear design that did this. A lot of pre 40 cars did this also. Cars gave up n these gears in faver of quit but weaker tranies. Trucks keep them untill beter designs that were strong were developed. Your ring and pinion gears are scored if there howling with one possible exception. You have a pinion bearing with a rough serface. Once ring/pinion gears are scored, the damage is done. If the noise is very slight you MIGHT help it with heavier gear lube. Temperary fix at best. on a truck your age I would do a junkyard search for a replacement. There would be some risk it may howl to but junkyards back up there used parts actually better then new parts . At least here they do. Makes people comfertable buying them. Would save you a lot of money and you could do the job yourself easy.Try for the 392's. Also I never heard of these years having gear problems. My truck is a 99 4x4 CC 5.2 . Not a whisper of a noise. Trany problems seems to be happening but I'm convinced the large majority of that is from the abusers/ racers. these same guys insist they should handle any abuse you can dish out . Ha Ha Ha. On day they well look back and say..... WHAT WAS I THINKING LOL .

So many problems .... So little time

Obio3,
I KNEW it was from somewhere between the bumpers.

You're right about leadfoot's damaging them. All manufacturers engineer back to what will work for oh, say 100,000 miles, in order to save money. What's the point of a million mile part in the junk yard?

all the dodges have a noise when loaded 1 way
and shifted like parking on a hill and putting
it in gear clunk not to worrie

posi, antispin sure grip run any fluid you like
but get the additive from chrysler and add it in
also the mr moly additive will make them run
quiter and last longer

1 other thing we ran into on the dodge rears is
the adjusters for setting back lash on the ring
gears backs off than they make a hell of a noise
like a bearing is toasted

Thanks again for all the input. Even though the gears looked alright when I pulled the cover there may be something else in there making the noise. It almost sounds like noisy tire hum but is definately changeable by varying throttle application slightly. Feathering the throttle makes it go away (basically unloading the driveline). So, I guess I bite the bullet and get it repaired. Will let you know what happens.
