Subject: Ticking sound from throttle body area IP: Logged
Message: Symptoms
• Ticking sound from throttle body area (seems to be intermittent based on weather)
• Ticking is more intense as weather is colder 60° or below
• No noticeable ticking at higher temperatures 70° or above
• Intense ticking and vibration on long hills very noticeable during colder weather (especially holding the RPM at and above 2000 – sounds like it is going to come through the dash)
• Slight intermittent backfire at highway speeds
• Intermittent rough idle (especially if as soon as I bring it up to temp and turn it off to run into a store – when I come back out very rough idle but only intermittent)
Recent Repairs/Tweaks
• Performed TPS tweak
• Tested TPS and MAP sensor as per the Haynes Repair Manual (okay)
• Cleaned throttle body
• Cleaned IAC solenoid
• New distributor cap, rotor, bosch platinum plugs, bosch wires, PCV valve, ignition coil, fan, water pump, belt tensioner
• Running 20W-50 Castrol GT motor oil
• Fuel injector cleaner
• Pull plug wires to see if ticking stop but it only increases two fold
• Tested spark plug wire current with screw driver and engine block (lots of spark)
99 Dakota 4x4 3.9L
• 140,000 miles
• Only owner
• Second catalytic converter
• Needs new catalytic converter (sounds like a sick rattle snake)
• Catalytic converter does not seem to be restricting emissions (just passed Maryland emissions)
• Getting 15 mile to the gallon (driving consists of both highway and city) – highway speeds around 70 mph
Next Steps to Fix (need suggestions please)
• Injection Sync (this weekend)
• Compression check (never done and looking for guidance)
• Looking for link to plenum gasket test (I lost link)
• New catalytic converter (really hate this one rather expensive)
• Possibly use engine cleaner (thinking of trying AutoRX)
Other possibilities seen on this forum?
• Busted Distributor Drive
• Crank Thrust
• Lifters
• Plenum gasket
• Compression
• Fuel Pump
• Catalytic converter
I am not a mechanic, but like to do everything I can myself. I am open to suggestions and any other advice. My truck has been good to me, and I am not ready to part with it.
