Subject: Popping Noise?! IP: Logged
Message: Hi, I have a 2001 3.9 V6 Dakota with almost 74k miles on it. After I start it up and get going you can hear popping coming from the front in the engine area. After it pops which is usually for a minute it stops and doesnt do it again until after it has sat for a while, not on of course. When I am trying to pick up speed and it pops I'll be pressing the gas down (Flooring it will make multiple rapid pops)and it just pops and barely accelerates then it will all of a sudden take off and thats it, then its good until after it sits a while. You can feel it on the gas pedal when it does it. To sum that up my truck, most of the time, pops after i start up, only when I am pushing on the gas, for no more than a minute (Depending on how much i am accelerating). I just had it serviced too and they replaced wires, plugs, cleaned fuel injectors. Please help!

Message: they could have crossed 2 plug wires or maybe put a bad set of wires on or possibly you got a bad plugs.... i would take it back and tell them you got a problem that didnt exsist till you had it serviced..

Message: ok thought it happened afterwards.... unless you got a bad ignition coil its possible you can have a problem in the distributer like a bad cam/crank sensor....

Message: On another forum i was told to replace the o2 sensor before the cat. This one guy that said it says he had the same problem. Does that sound accurate?

Message: I'm assuming your sure this is coming from the engine and if so I'm guessing it's coming from the TB/intake . it's actualy a backfire in reverse. This can only happen if an intake valve is at least partially open or held open. Bottom line. The engine has to fire a plug orrrrrrr have a red hot spot in a cylender to do this. Doing it shortly after startup pretty much elimenates hot spot. That leaves crossed wires, wires that are bad causing cross fire, cracked dist cap, a cap with a carbin track in it or a sticking valve, bad wire ends at the distributer end allowing them to spark between themselfs and most likely some other things not coming to mind. I'd sure be surprised if a 02 senser was able to cause this. Just no way I can explain that in my head. No clue what they did to your truck or worse what they said they did. At this point. Don't look beyond something there saying was done . Even if they did, new parts can be defective also.
So many problems .... So little time

Message: well its possible that an intake valve could be sticking at times like maybe theres carbon build up or just bent and at times it seats and other times it dont... it can be bent just enough to make a random backfire through the intake at times... and also maybe there's just enought slack in the timing chain making the timing off just enough to allow it backfire up through intake.... its just one of those things that takes time to find.... theres just way so many possiblities that it can be..

Message: How about it being the Fuel Filter? Also, I am pretty sure I found a small bottle of water evaporator in the bed of the truck when i bought it (used). Could that explain anything? Even though i wouldnt know if it was even used on my truck.

Any mis-fire should be throwing codes. Is the check engine lamp coming on? Crossfire can be inspected by looking under the hood at night or a dark garage. Shut off your under hood light. It helps if it's a little damp or foggy. You may lightly spray the wire path and distributor with a water spray bottle (engine off) for testing. Look for a lightning storm. Touch or nudge things with a wooden rod. BZZZZZZ!
Fuel filter and tank may be suspect for water in the fuel. Any lean condition or water creates backfire on throttle demand. It shouldn't get better when warm though. Add a bottle of "Heet" if you hit the wall.
Might be a self-healing vacuum leak. The worst to find. Squirt starting fluid around hoses and the intake area. Listen for the idle to pickup.

Message: I have had the same Problem, I have a 2002 4x4 Dakota it happenes off and on, maybe once or twice a year. It seems to happen more when it's cold and raining or snowing. it on happens for a few minutes and goes away there never is any code.
sometimes I have to pull over and shut the truck off then it seems to go away. If it was crossed plug wires it would happen all the time.
Dodge has not been able to figure it out ever, It's really pissing me off I had a 1994 dodge dakota I had it for 8 years and beat the crap out of it Never had a problem, should have kept it,I have not replaced the O2 sensor, I'm about to give up and trade it in for a Toyota.

Message: could also be that your timing chain has stretched over time and now your distributor alignment with events in the cylinder is off...
the fuel sync alignment (ie distibutor alignment) is critical to your fuel injectors firing at the right time. this sounds exactly like the problem I had. I followed larry's write up that i posted below

motor at TDC rotor pointing at or near #1 wire

damper at 0 always turn clockwise never turn back
or you will get any slop in the chain and dist
gear and be way off
looking from front of truck straight down over
rotor, pickup plat has 1 line marked cyl
with the rotor button centered over line 0
back edge of rotor lined with line towards the
clockwise position +3
most are set from factory at 0 to -6 not good
+3 to +6
1 degree on dist = 2 crank the intake opens 8
degrees before TDC and fireing the injector just
after this opens will catch it when both valves
are open and the scavaging effect will help draw
the fuel in faster while the exhaust and intake
are both open at the same time the exhaust pulse
actualy helps pull in the fuel (overlap) 32
degrees they are both open at the same time
Fireing the injector at 0 TDC you will miss this
and just be drawing with the piston down stroke
improved low end gas mileage and perf will be
noticeable from going to the plus side
