Subject: Oil Filter problem IP: Logged
Message: Hi All,
I hope I can explain this correctly. I have a 1997 Dakota V6 2 wheel drive. I went to change the oil yesterday and the last shop that did the filter change put it on super tight. When I was taking it off I noticed the plate were the filter nipple attached turned a little with the filter. (I don't know what you call it.) I put on the new filter and tightened it. I started the truck and noticed the filter leaking from the bottom. I then tried to tighten the filter more-same thing. My question is what is that piece called? The nipple is attached to it and it can turn.
Thank you,
Bill

Message: well if the nipple that the oil filter threads on to turned it really shouldnt leak past the filter cause of the rubber o ring on the filter.... its possible that the old rubber o-ring stuck on the houseing and when you put the new filter on it went over the old o ring which then in return will cause a leak.... the filter just threads up right to the block... once it touches the block it shouldnt leak...

Message: No,
I always check to make sure the old gasket (oring) is not stuck there. It looks like on the block there is a round piece of metal. In the center of the metal there is the nipple. The round piece that is on the block turned.

Message: You have seated the filter on that threaded part, but the threaded part is loose on the block. So you'll have to remove the filter, turn the threaded part on tight with a wrench, and reinstall filter.
Sounds like the last person put the filter on with a wrench.

Message: That round plate should be sealed to the block and held in place by that "nipple". If it did turn you could have broken the seal and it will leak... the oil filter gasket seals to the plate so if you have the oil filter on tight and its still leaking.. you will have to remove that "pound plate" and reseal it

Message: Forseti,
Thats exactaly what it was. I brought it in and they said the gasket on the plate needed to be replaced.
Thank you everyone for your help.
