 Subject: Transmission problem

I have a 90 Dak 3.9 w/auto w/ OD aNd it won't shift into 3rd. The OD quit working for a loNg time is their any body that can tell me what the wires that plug into the transmission do, what there for? Because one was cut. was going to replace transmission and found the cut wire. ANY input will help.
