Subject: 94 3.9L Will not warm up IP: Logged
Message: I recently put a 93 3.9L engine in a 94. Everything went fine, put all the 94 parts on the 93 engine. The truck is back together and running, but it will not warm up. The parts store gave me a 180 degree thermostat, which I know might be the problem. But it seems like the t-stat is forever open, and not allowing the engine to come up to operating temp. I am going to replace with a 195 degree t-stat, just wanted to see if anyone had any other suggestions.
Thank you.

Message: Is it actually not warming up, or is the guage "saying" it'd not warming up? If the engine is really staying cool, yes, change the T-stat(or check for proper installation), if not, i'd check the temperature sensor.
If it doesn't fit, you're using the wrong hammer!

Message: Thanks cuzindoug. I changed the t-stat to a 195 degree and everything looks as it should. The truck warmed up this morning. I bet the temp sensor is going bad and the combo of the 180 degree t-stat was giving me the cold reading.

Message: You do realise the temperature gauge is for decoration?
If, I say If, the gauge is accurate don't rely on it for overheating.
What you could do is stick a thermometer on the right center vent (more air) with the heat on maximum. As you drive you should eventually get 130 degrees
Also, doesn't the thermostat recirculate hot agua as it warms up the engine? As that is happening, won't the gauge read cold?

Message: I appreciate the thought. I would not expect the temp gauge to be 100% accurate, but it's not there for decoration. By your account, all temp gauges in cars do nothing, which, at least in my own experience is not the case. I'll try your thermometer on the center vent and see what I get, but it's coming out much warmer than the past few days. Also, I may be incorrect on this, but the thermomstat DOES NOT recirculate hot water as the engine warms up. It doesn't open until the water inside the engine reaches a high enough temp to open the t-stat, then it will recirculate water throughout the engine.

Message: The coolant will recirculate around the engine block(not the radiator) through the bypass hose until it reaches the temp that the t-stat will start to open, then it circulates water though the radiator. You don't want the coolant to be constantly circulating though the radiator when cold or the engine will never warm up, never enter closed loop operation, and drink your gas at a higher rate.
