Here is the story. I'm buyint a travel traler that weights about 3,500lbs with all in.
You can see my spects below.
The manual has a blank for my Gross Combined Weight Rating GCWR - Lets call it 8,500lbs. So I'm guessing the truck weighs about 5,000 with me in it. That leaves 3,500 for towing.
So the question is do I replace my 3.55 gears with 4.10 gears. I could then tow more than 4,200 lbs.
Or do I just buy a Nissan Titan and get it over with.
I'm planning a long trip= months -with towing a travel trailer. That is why I'm concerned about the towing.
Anyone else upgrade their QC 4x4 V6 to 4.10 gears?

The Dakota 3.9 can not even come close to the Nissan Titan V8. That truck has way more power than a gear change on your Dakota will ever make. Simple decision to make, if you can afford it.

I like my Dak and would like to keep it.
Maybe I'll look into smaller tires.
If I understand it correctly, smaller tires has the effect of going to a larger gear
I mean going from 3.55 to something higer like 3.9 - I always get confused as to what is a larger or smaller gear

changing from 3.55:1 to 4.10:1 essentially gives the engine mmore leverage to make it easier for the engine to move the truck.
same effect as going to a smaller tire. i went from 215/75/15 tire on my '00 QC w/3.9 & 5spd to 235/75/15 tires and i noticed a difference in the way the truck accelerated. but the v8 tb made up that little bit of diff.
IMO, if you really like the dak keep it and change the gears. if not go buy yourself a new truck to meet your needs.

Dex, go to www.ring-pinion.com and they have calculators on the site to determine tire heights and gear ratios. Play with the numbers till you get the right sizes. I am thinking you would have to go fairly small in tire size to reach 4:10 or 3.92.

Thanks for all the advise.
I found a calculator that tells me if I go from 30.1" to 27.95" diamiter tires with a 3.55 grear it would give me an effective gear of 3.82 - if I understand it correctly
So smaller tires are out!
I'm thinking I'll get the new truck. I would hate to upgrade the gears to 4.10, start my trip and have problems.
I hate to say it but "I should have had a V8"

Mine has 3.55 gears, and towing 3500 pounds this weekend had it working pretty hard. Of course, the gas mileage went to hell in a handbag, too.
Go with the new truck, if you can afford it.

Or maybe spend a few extra $ and get a V8 in your Quadcab? Like the truck you just want more power. Put the 4.7 in it and there ya go. Same truck more power less money spent.

replacing gears isnt that hard to do and is alot cheaper then buying a 30k+ truck.... hell i got a 3.9 in my dakota and ive pulled 25ft boats cars on car trailers.... ive basicly towed with my truck a weight range of 3500 to 5000 pounds on the 3.55 gears runnin a 275-75-15 tire with the OD off untill i got a flat level surface if i was on the highway.... if i hit a hill turned the OD off and cruised that way... but never had a problem... 42K on the ODO and still runnin strong....

Engine swap... waaaayyyyy cheaper than a new truck. I love my Dak and I also wish it had a V8... With the 20,000k+ it would cost me to buy a new titan, my Dakota would tear that Titan to shreds... of course 20k is a rediculous amount of money to spend on a motor. Check out Mopars complete engines on their site... a 360ci engine pushing 395HP and 400+ torque will run you about 6500... throw in a few other things like ecu, harness, tranny, whatever, and it will put you around 8000 max... 20,000 > 8,000...

Buy a silverado for 20k and you're better off. You can get an ext. cab 4x4 for 20k, possibly leather. It'll tow your trailer no problem. You and I both know once you start your engine swap it'll take 3 months to finish like mine did. You're better off upgrading to a full-size for the suspension, engine and all around beefiness.

I have a 93 dakota and a 2005 Titan. The dakota has always knocked on regular and needed midgrade. With
the 5 speed it gets about 20-23 MPG on the hiway and
about 17 around town. I got the cheapest Titan I could find rated to tow 6500Lbs at $16999. I put the banks exhaust on it that's loud but it gets 20
mpg hiway if I keep it below 65 and about 15 around town. The cheap Titan has a lower ratio rear end and
no electric windows locks etc but AC,PS, 5 Speed Auto cruise etc. I still like the Dakota around town as it's a lot easier to park.
