Subject: 3.9l Torque Curve IP: Logged
Message: I know the 3.9l has a maximum torque of 225ft/lbs.
I think it hits the max at 3200 rpms.
Questions
What is the ft/lbs at 2000 rpms?
Is the max ft/lbs at 3200 rpms?
Thanks

Message: unless anyone here has dyno'ed their truck being stock thats a had question to answer... just figure 100% of its torque is 225 at 3g break it down in precentages... that should give ya an idea of what you might be looking for to answer your question.... but if your going over 3g on the RPMS the torque drops off so that answer only get answered by a dyno.... but only a dyno is gonna give ya your true answer of what you got at the wheels....

Message: I dynoed my 2000 Dakota 4x4 3.9L when it was stock and it made the max torque at between 3300 and 3800 rpms.
It made 173 ft/lbs of torque between 3300 and 3800 and about 140 ft/lbs at 2000 rpms.
Hope this helps.

Message: but also the dyno is showing rear wheel power.... the results you said of 225 and so forth are possible the manufactures results of power at the flywheel ....

Message: Dex, you may want to consider changing your gears. especially if you're going to tow through hills or mountains.
you've got a very heavy truck for the 3.9. i know i have a QC Sport 4x2 w/3.9, 5spd man, 3.55 gears and 235/75/15's. if i were going to get a travel trailer i'd get at least 3.92's or 4.10's. but that's my .02.

Message: Daddio,
I'm guessing it would cost me about $2,000 or more to change the gears.
Since the truck is a 2000 I might as well bite the bullet and get a new truck!
I didn't think I was going to really tow anything when I chose the engine

Message: well, if you're not that attached to your truck then by all means trade up. i thought you might already have the truck you really want, ie, color, options, etc. and really weren't looking to trade.

Message: that torque number is at the wheels. since sometime in the 70s all performance values are net (at the wheels) and not gross(at the flywheel) the reason why it probably read lower is because that 225 is under ideal conditions on a fresh and properly broken in engine/ drivetrain

Message: Weirdkid, I don't mean to sound like a jerk here or anything, but... net hp is *not* rear-wheel hp. Net & gross hp are both measured at the flywheel. The difference between net and gross hp is this:
Gross hp was measured with all conditions optimum for maximized power production: no air cleaner, no mufflers, no accessories other than the water pump, and no emission controls - just the engine itself on a dyno. Also, timing and air/fuel ratios were optimized every 200rpm or so. In other words, gross hp ratings were a way for manufacturers to "cheat" and inflate their hp #'s for advertising purposes.
Net hp much more accurately reflects the hp you *actually* get at the flywheel. It's measured with all equipment installed on the engine that would be in place in the actual car - everything, all sensors, filters, emission control stuff, complete factory exhaust - everything. It is also measured at a higher temperature and % humidity to better replicate real-world conditions.
By the way, the switch from net to gross was in 1971.
