Subject: Second Car ( ? ) IP: Logged
Message: My dakota has 190+K miles on it and they aren't all freeway miles. I am looking for a second car to save gas and a all-around beater. I found a car, a Subaru Justy for cheap. It has low miles but the tranny is a auto and has some issue with it. Haven't driven the car yet, but according to the add "when you first start it up, it will drive, but shortly after it warms up, gears do nothing." This doesn't sound like its that bad, could be wrong. I am wondering if there is a possiblity that it might be something other than a new tranny needed here. I am not familar with automatic trannys other than torque converter shudder and over heating. Please let me know if there are other possibilities other than a new tranny. I know its not much info. but its a shot.
Thanks.

Message: Sounds like the trans is slipping really, really bad - the symptoms you're describing would indicate that the clutch packs are toast. If you get this car, you'll have to replace the transmission.

Message: Shucks. It sounded like it worked until it got warmed up, but thats being optimitic. Thought there was a chance. If I drive it I'll get a better idea. Maybe someone else will have some input. Thanks though.

Message: Wrong place to be asking in my opinion. I'd be finding the best man I could with a lot of experence on this trany. Low miles dictates something less then a rebuild is in order. I wouldn't give up so easy. Good luck.
So many problems .... So little time

Message: what your issue is that once tha tranny warms up the fluid thins out and there is a pressure loss and then slippage accours... the pressure loss is due to warn clutch packs and bad internal seals... the only fix is to replace tranny... and with it being an older subaru i wouldnt buy it even if it was for couple hundred bucks... most of those cars are in junk yards and those tranny's probably arent to far behind befor they crap out.... in all repects... Message: Go figure, guys. My dakota just crapped out on me today. Was having tranny problems with the slipping and overdrive. I have to keep an eye on using the O/D. I was unlocking the torque coverter by the little orange button and instantly the engine dies as I do this. Stranded in the rural back roads. Cop found me couple of miles down the road and patted me down. Guess I look suspicsious. lol.
I have the day off tomorrow so will be looking into car problem. i think its shot though. Sounded like the engine was missing for some reason. Didn't sound electrical prior to shut down. Engine was progressively making louder and louder noises, and up until this it felt like the engine was surging rather than a constant power flow... Maybe not all pistons were firing. Last thing I did to it was flush the engine out 2K ago. The truck has 190K on it, wondering if this flush really screwed something up. Might have to just look at the Subaru. It sounds like a piece, but I can't afford much. Tow truck driver says place he works for sometimes sells cars for cheap. They are junk, but they are like $200. I need to go to work on monday. lol.
