Message: vern,
Thanks. So, you're saying that at normal operating speeds, around 2,000RPM for the v6 automatic, I should be reading about 20lb pressure?
Why then, has the damn gauge always read the high side of 40 even at idle, until I changed the cam?
Is the Tach accurate? I know the gas gauge is and the water temp is useless and there to balance out the panel.
Ah, grrrr.

Message: a electric gauge is,nt as sensative as a manual gauge to movement with this said you should have about 20psi and more[at idle hot]30-40psi at cruise to keep things happy in there
the oil light can come on anywhere from 3-7psi depending on sending unit
with the mileage you have the oil pump shaft could be wore badly, did you check this when you replaced the cam?it,s the same shaft that drives the dist. with the gear on it in the back
i,m thinking like some of the other guys oil pump just plain wore-out,for $30 and oil pan gasket its worth a try

Message: vern,
Can't wait to see the under-inside of the engine, but I've been foiled again, this time by my itty bitty tools. My breaker bar twisted my two foot extension like a torsion bar through 90 degrees trying to loosen the motor mount nut.
I'm frustrated because I already because I had to go to Ty Pennington's favorite store and buy a 21mm deep socket I'll use once and I don't want to do the same with a heavier extension. The one I'll buy tomorrow.
Never been in this territory, and don't want to be here, but it will be interesting to see how a part that lives in lubrication wears out.
Again, thank you.

Message: New deal now. I did not reread all but either I missed an early mention that all preasure problems started with cam replace or this just got mentioned way to late. As for the pump, I'd be very surprised if the gears have not dug into the plate pretty deep causing at least some preasure lose BUT.... Why are you even looking in the pan IF things was reasonable prior to the CAM SHAFT replacement. Your telling yourself where the problem is and not paying attention. Are you without a question sure the cam was the exact one your engine required. If yes you must have pushed one of the cam bearings out of place or gouged it allowing masive oil to dump stealing your preasure. Reguardless what happened, if what you say is right on right to the day of installation something went wrong during the installation. We all screw up at times. That's life. With a lying guage, who knows how long the preasure was low. Maybe it really is just a tired engine.
So many problems .... So little time

Message: Excuse the inexperienced, but can't you see some parts of the insides when you take of the oil pan?I don't kow, I have never done it. But if I took a guess thats where I would start to look first for the bearings. Also, that would be of many peoples interests M. Shatto, if you did take a look at the bearings. That is a true test for amsoil. You should take pictures of your bearings like GraphiteDakota and post them. Thats probablly the most legitatmite amsoil test yet. And I don't mean that in a bad way.

Shatto,
I'm not the best person to help you post a picture, but at least this gives me an excuse to post one myself.
There may be an easier way, but maybe this gets you there. It's awkward to demonstrate, because if I do it comes up with the little box with the red x but here goes.
You have to use HTML code as follows:
img src="insert address here"
... plus it must have brackets at both ends as follows <_______> (but not the underline).
Use exactly as above, just replace insert address here with your own information
Sample below:
It's a picture of the 2005 AMSOIL SNOWMOBILE RACING TEAM.
It's from 2005 but who cares - we aren't looking at the guys anyway!

Message: Update time;
My meager tool kit was too small to loosen the motor mounts, and my mechanic found some room so AAA towed Truckie to Dex's Automotive in Concord,CA (RedLineRock), and we followed the official mechanics instructions ( which says it is a 3 hour job to change the oil pump) to remove motor mounts and raise the motor then the pan will fall out onto the garage floor. It didn't. Six hours later we figure the only way that pan is comming out is to pull the engine. We'll squeeze in the gap and replace the pump that way.
matt,
everything is a pretty golden color. I'll get some kind of picture.

Message: End of story;
Old pump out, new pump in.
Oil pressure at idle was 2-3 PSI
Oil pressure at idle now 10 PSI
Oil pressure running was 9-10 PSI
Oil pressure running now 30 PSI
Using a mechanical gauge.
New sender says pressure is always 40 PSI
Moral of story; ?
Thanks all for the interest, suggestions and support.

I have to admit, I was a sceptic in the beginning as well. My brother has been an Amsoil Dealer for over 15 years. He tried to switch me to Amsoil for over a decade. I never listened to him for the same reasons many don't listen to me.
However, I switched all my fluids to AMSOIL in 2001 and now I am an AMSOIL believer, ... because I can see and feel the difference myself (lower operating temps, better mpg, quieter operation, better shifting, extended drains which saves oil, etc., etc., etc.). In 2002 I became an AMSOIL dealer myself so that I could share the information with others.
That being said, if anyone is interested in finding out more about AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oils, Lubricants and Filters ... Please click the following link and Request a FREE AMSOIL CATALOG.
All I ask is ... Please consider Amsoil. The choice is yours.

Message: Steve,
I'll consider it and I'll even try it against other synthetics, why not? Is there any where in the Bay Area that sells it that I could just pick up? I rather not buy it over the internet but if I have to I would. Thanks.

Message: Matt,
Let me rephrase that; I'm in Concord, where you?
If Steve has a downline here you might think about being sponsored so you can buy at Steve's cost.
I get my products from a Master Jobber who has a store, where you can touch and feel, in Santa Clara.
