Subject: Turbo City Dual Air Filter VS. FIPKs,etc IP: Logged
Message: http://www.turbocity.com/JeepDualAirFilter.htm
Hello people...
Does anybody else have experience with this item? I do. I like it- a lot- but it makes some serious noise (hissing) when I first start the engine up, and also occasionally hisses after I let off the gas after accelerating hard. Do any of the FIPKs or other intakes do this also? I installed it according to the directions and even called the place afterwards to inquire about the noise... The guy there told me it was normal (some breather function or something)... Problem is, it doesn't sound right.
Mind you, this intake is great and I really do notice a difference with the computer adjusting to it. I did that the same day I added a DynoMax superturbo muffler to it... It was louder than hell at first (NOT what I wanted) but has quieted down significantly since then... Still noisy at 4K rpms but I can live with it.
Thanks for any comments you may have. Maybe my solution is going to the junkyard and getting some underhood pad! (something I've been thinking about doing anyway...)

Message: I have looked at Turbocities intake alot over the past year or so and I really see only one thing that I don't like about it. Their is really no use for 2 intake tubes unless it the engine takes 2 like the 4.2l ford engines and another thing is I haven't really seen one on a truck or Jeep in my area so I can't judge them but I would say that 2 pipes vs. 1 wouldn't make that big a differance if you have the 3.9. I myself want to get that Cuba shaker hood and a K&N extreme filter now that would be a true ram air with no pipe.

Message: Hi metalgreen,
Thanks for your reply. I can tell you that this setup does work and really improves the way the truck drives...
I was just wondering if 1: anybody has experience with the Dual air filter and 2: If anybody (with or without experience with that filter) who has experience knows if the FIPK makes a loud hissing noise when the engine's cold, and after a hard pull when the engine's warm...

Message: Not to worry - the cold hissing is the unobstructed airway allowing you to hear the TB pulling air into the engine under cold start conditions. I haven't heard the hot hissing yet. My FIPK does noticeably improve power, but it's so much easier (funner) to stand on the throttle, it's hard to keep mileage up.

Message: Thanks Daddy-D... I think I'll be investing in some underhood sound insulation soon! Just wanted to make sure I wasn't the only one ; )
It does make a big difference on the "go" pedal... I can't wait for a larger throttle body and electric fan conversion! Only 2.5 years to go. ; )

Message: Macman37, Did you purchase the Turbo City intake that is listed for the V8's? If so, did you experience any problems with fitment on the 3.9?
Thanks,

Message: Hey Mike,
I called the place and asked if the kit would fit the v-6 without modifications, the guy said yes. There were two small problems when I installed it - first, the breather hose (I don't know what else to call it - it's the spongy feeling hose that comes off the left side of the engine when you're looking straight at it) is on the left, and apparently it's on the right for Jeeps. So I switch the threaded plug to the other side, and put the L-tube in on the left side. The threads on the threaded plug get all buggered up on the coating they put on the thing (looks great, but isn't the best thread lube! ; P )... So supposedly I have one in the mail coming to me soon - I called them on it. The other thing is, you have to make sure that the throttle cable doesn't interfere with the new placement of the breather hose... I didn't check mine good before I took it out on the road and found that I couldn't stomp on the accelerator - something stuck. It was an easy fix and something that someone else would have noticed right away... I'm not the most technically oriented guy when it comes to vehicles!
So, to sum up a long story, it fits on the 3.9 easy, only took about 1/2 hour or less to install (including moving the truck in my garage because it started raining), watch the connections and don't cross thread that plug... I'm going to use my Dremel tool to clean out the threads this time...
hope this helps!

Message: Jim, Thanks for all the info, very helpful. I think I am going to get this set up instead of the K&N FIPK. This one will leave the area of the factory air box open for the installation of an oil filter relocation kit. Thanks again.

Message: Glad I could help, Mike.
I liked this setup for a couple of reasons... the biggest one being that it's cheaper than a FIPK. It may not be the shielded cold-air-only setup people buy the FIPKs for, but I got to thinking... You may not get cold air in the engine bay when you're stopped or even driving slowly, but you're mixing that cool air with the hot air under the hood when you're going faster than, say, 10 miles per hour... Why not get the less expensive alternative? And if you're going to get a hissing noise with either, hey, I'll save the extra bucks and use it for this... Some of the places I priced FIPKs out at (esp. the next generation ones) cost so much that I got the muffler installed and the filter setup for less than one FIPK.
Not to take anything away from the FIPK crowd, but I have a set amount of $$$ I am willing to spend on truck mods right now! ; ) I am enjoying the extra power and smoother shifting this setup makes.

Message: wow thats a little off subject.....
I had a single port wastegate on my shelby and i really dont remember what hose went where.... i think it split into the map sensor and intake vaccum source. On my truck i have a dual port wastegate (big port on the side, smaller one on top) and the smaller one hooks up to the compressor housing (with a fitting) and the bigger one is hooked up to my intake manifold (source of vacuum). i will look up some pics if i can..
macman,
i also had the mopar performance fipk a while back and it was a good intake. I think that it costs more because they are designed/tuned for specific applications, have a heat shield, bigger name filter (correct me if i am wrong but i dont think the tc uses k&n) and better quality parts (from what i have seen). That turbo city intake is just a universal intake that will fit any 5 1/4" throttle body/carb that has the room around it... so its easy to sell them for cheaper. Now it sounds like i am just trying to defend a part that i purchased but i will agree that the fipk is over priced.... i just wanted the mopar performance logo on mine ;-)

Message: Hey Intense,
The Turbo City intake comes with two K&N performance filters... You can order it without them if you want though.
Funny thing, too: when I installed the V-8 TB, the intake hissing went away. Now it's nearly as quiet as a stock intake.
take care,
jim
