Subject: Bad Vibes part 2 IP: Logged
Message: I posted before about weird vibes. Right now I have the rear of the truck on jack stands. I had my wife start it up, and run it. The front drive shaft seems solid as a rock, but the rear shaft is for sure doing some pretty serious vibration. It appears the U joints are OK. I pushed, and pulled on them, and they seem secure. If I grab the rear drive shaft up by the center support, and push up, down, and sideways on it, there is a lot of movement there. I'm sure this will need to be replaced, but I'm wondering why it wood have got bad right after having the transmission replaced? I don't have a problem replacing the center support, but don't want an underlaying problem to cause it to fail again.
Any help, comments, or suggestions wood be greatly appreciated.

Message: Just a guess... but talk to the place where you got it done. See what they say. Maybe they will act accordingly and take responsibility.
my two cents,,,,.......

Message: I did call them, and was told it had nothing to do with the transmission. They did say they wood fix the problem thou. I'd still have to pay to get it fixed. I'd rather just do it myself. The parts not expensive, but since I've never changed one, I'm wondering what I'd be getting into.

Message: Sorry WooD, then I don't have some sound advice on what do to. I have only had the u-joints go out on me and not the drive shaft itself.? Maybe some one else will chime in.

Message: Pushing and pulling on u joints doesn't tell you much of anything unless there ready to fall apart. You need to look very carefull and closely while you try to turn the shaft slowly first one way then the other. Sometimes the slop will be so slight you can barely tell there is a problem . thing is, when you remove them you would be surprised how that small movement now is a large one. Just the way it is. By the time you have very visible movement you have a dangerous situation needing a fast fix.

Message: I found a driveline shop in Daytona, and he wants me to bring the truck in. I havn't drove in since I noticed the movement in the shaft.
This week end I'm gonna change the U joint to see if that solves the problem. If it doesn't I'll just take the truck in.
I was thinking of putting the U joint in myself, but hear its a real pain to get in if you dont have a press. Anyone do there own w/o a press? I do have a vice, but doubt its big enough.

Message: I've done alot of u-joints, mostly on our B250 (driveshaft is slighty out of alignment after the dump truck hit it, but thats a story to be told later) On my dakota i've done only a couple, no press. I kinda do it the brutal way, with a hammer and a couple sockets. To take them out, I use one socket bigger then the cap (approx the same size as the ears) and one the size of the cap. The bigger one i put under the lower cap and hammer the smaller one on the top side (opposing one) until the lower cap pops out into the socket. once that happens i turn it over and put the small socket over the exposed joint and hammer it back the other way popping the other cap out. i then remove the joint and place the new one in, then very carefully so as not to mis align the bearings in the new caps! and press it together slowly in the vise. you may have to use a set of smaller sockets once the caps get close to the driveshaft to finish pushing them in for the clips (cause you don't want to bend the ears on the driveshaft). I've done many so i'm used to doing it this way. If you've got questions on how i do this, just ask. If you wanna know more about how our van survived the dump truck (of which got written off... lol) i can tell that story too.

Message: oh i forgot to tell you. the u-joints on my dakota were only bad in one cap. the grease and bearings were gone, all that was left was rust! i did the wiggle test and torque tests, the only reason i really decided to replace them was because i had done them so many times on our van and it just seemed so similar.

Message: I doubt my vice will spread out enough to allow the drive shaft, and a couple sockets. I have a pretty large C clamp that might do the trick to get them started. Once started could I use a brass hammer to tap them the rest of the way in?
Thanks,

Message: taping them in/out isnt a good idea
you want to press them in/out
when putting new ones in
if your vise isnt big enough
large heavy duty C clamp will work
clean the ends up with some dry steel wool
and then a light coat of WD40
(will make it a bit easier)

Message: I picked up a new U joint yesterday. Took the drive shaft out today with plans on taking it to a shop tomorrow to have the U joint pressed in. I found a site on line on how to do it without a vise or press. I thought to myself.........
Self why don't you just try taking the old joint out, cant do much harm doing that. So I got a big socket, and placed the UJ on it, then took a smaller deep well socket, and tapped it a little, it came out without any trouble at all. Then I thought..... might as well try putting the new one in the same way.
Piece of cake. Not a worry or problem one.
I did spend about an hour under the dreaded Dakota trying to get the shaft back in. After many "smoke" breaks, and mass agitation. I saw there was a slot in the shaft to line the two up.
Just got back from a test drive, and I am most damn happy. No more bad vibes here.
Thanks to all of y'all.
