Message: i have a 2000 dakota with a 3.9 and auto tranny. For the past few weeks it has been running like crap at certian times. It will start up fine and everything and drive good, but when i am at slow speeds and low rpms it will SOMETIMES spit and stutter and backfire into the engine, it is happening more and more now, the exhaust is really hot and rich at these times. It put up all o2 sensor codes so i bought 2 new sensors and replaced them, now the check engine light comes on b/c of the first o2 sensor for some reason. When it starts to run bad i shut it off and restart it and it runs good, for a while. What could this be: clogged cat or bad pcm? fuel pump. COMPUTER PROBLEM ie need a new computer???????? it doesnt have ne vacume leaks i think. or what???????
o, and i just did a tune up on it, wires cap and rotor. it showed no change.

Message: are you getting any other codes besides the O2?
could be a few things. MAP sensor, CPS. you don't want to just start throwing money at it.
maybe find someone with a scantool so you can hook it up when it's running funky and pinpoint the problem.

Message: hey dddddd.... something else i thought of from your other pervious post on this subject... you could possibly have a bad ECT when the engine gets to a certain temp the coolant temp sensor could give off a false reading erracticly and make the engine dump more fuel then needed... it can make the computer think the engine got cold and needs more fuel to keep running to build heat when not needed... and on these newer vehicles the check engine light normally lights when there is a emmission probably only and may not kick the light on for a bad ECT sensor....

Message: Vacuum leaks rarely heal themselves, I'd rule that out.
You indicate the first O2 sensor throws re-occuring errors. Is this random, before or after the over-rich condition happens? Solve for this first. The computer may be trying to process false data from some sensor that results in going hyper-rich.
Killer diagnostic equipment such as dealer operated may be worth the bucks. Just pulling codes and guessing is a dark art.
