I had a bad solenoid in my tranny and replaced it. I did not know that starting in 2001, the fluid type is atf4. I ran dexcon/mercon for about 3400 miles and the tranny started acting real funny and shifting weird. I changed the filter last Thursday and added the dealer ATF4 fluid which only ran $7.50 a quart and now it shifts great again. Do you think my transmission will be ok ? I am thinking of changing the fluid again after 1000 miles just to be safe.

you should be ok but you might have to change that fluid again after you do it in 1k miles... it mixes and it will linger around... when you changed you only drained about 5 quarts of the wrong stuff out... the converter holds a good bit of the fluid... so now that you got the atf4 in it its mixed so its 50/50... when ya change it again in a 1k miles it will be about 75/25 mix or more... so ya might think of just getting the system flushed completely with atf4 from a tranny shop and just be done with it...

You can flush it yourself.
Amsoil has a procedure that I used. Messy, but it works.

ZZark,

Hey, umm, any tips or advice before hand on doing the PDF's instructions on tranny flushing? I looked at it. Looks easy enough and great way to save a few bucks. My only questions are about the rate it pumps out. Is that about the rate I flash flood the tranny fluid down the dip stick spout? lol. I mean, how do they even up, and did you stop the engine at some point to keep with the flow being pumped out?

Just wanted to raise some questions, hope you can help out,

-Justin

It helps to have 2 people, but I did it myself.
Buy about 2 quarts extra.
I must have pumped out more than necessary, 'cause I was 2 quarts short.

Buy ATF+4, or Amsoil Universal ATF.
You can also flush your power steering and install Amsoil ATF.
Amsoil also has the specs for capacities and filters. Very useful, and accurate.

Here is another good link with the same info plus more.

thanks zzark. ronder sounds like hes done it before... Only weird part in it was the mention to tranny fluid total fill and torque converter's portion of ATF fluid. Ronder made it sound like the two are different and you add up the two to get your grand total... am I right anybody? Definely going to flush it myself. Had tranny rebuilt once, never again if I can help it, right? ... Right.

Thanks for the posting,
Justin

I don't know if this works on the daks, but I bought a neon (never do it again) with 100K and I did a tranny flush with the cooler lines. Put the new fluid in a bucket and ran a length of hoses from there to the inlet line to the tranny, then ran another section of hose from the tranny cooler to another bucket. New fluid in and flushed the tranny AND cooler of old fluid. Work really well, and hardly a mess.

If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.
