This morning my battery was dead, I noticed a slight burning smell inside the truck. I could
not find any evidence of anything burned up, wires, fuses, etc. All of a sudden, the door
light switch popped out, I went to pick it up
and it was red hot. The spring and push switch must be on a temp sensor? This is a 1998 V6
dakota. I checked all the fuses, and none are melted or broken. Has anybody had similar experiences?

No, that isn't a temp switch, it sounds like the plastic that holds it together melted off. It is a normally closed switch, that is of course opened when the door is closed. It sounds like you had short in the switch (probably just a break down in the insulative properties of the switch housing) that drew JUST enough current to kill the battery, but not blow the fuse.

If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.
