Subject: 92,4X4, rear wheel locks up in forward IP: Logged
Message: The weirdest thing, if in 2 or 4WD when i try to drive forward the left rear wheel skids like it's frozen, but when I go in reverse it turns. I jacked it up to see if the brakes are frozen but it turns fine forward or reverse by hand (engine off). I wonder if the transfer case is locking it up? I'm not sure what to check next?

Message: sounds like something with the diff. i don't see how the transfere case would cause that because it still turns the driveshaft to the diff. so if it was locking up then the drivshaft would stop. be more clear on the discription of whats happening, does it do it when coasting or on acc.?

Message: Right now it is stuck in my driveway, if I start it up and put it in drive left rear wheel skids on the pavement, if I put it in reverse it will go backward. Parking brake is off. When I put a jack under it and lifted the Left rear wheel it spun both ways by hand, freely. Right now its snow on the ground, but I wondered how the transfer case works, if it turns both rear wheels together (ie it doesn't allow to slip?)

Message: Transfer case would not cause this. Sounds like your rear differential has a problem.

Message: I think I know exactly what this is: the drum is out of round and worn out. The shoes are seizing against the drum. This happened to my 72 Dart when I bought it in 1982, with original brakes at 144,000 miles. I would back up, stop, and step on the gas and the right rear wheel locked up in a skid, with my foot on the gas. Don't wait too long to fix it, I burned out an axle bearing within 3 weeks.
Replace drum with new one, and new shoes. Maybe new spring kit and wheel cylinder if they're old enough.
Sometimes you can get it to release by setting the brake firmly and releasing it again.
Make sure you have the primary and secondary shoes installed the right way. They're not interchangeable on all vehicles.

Message: That could be an out of round drum - shoes could adjust to the wide point, then bind at the narrow point.
Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Message: Dak 94, sounds like your e-brake channels are seized up. A quick check is to pull the drums off, and wiggle the parking brake strut back and forth (the strut is above the axle, under the wheel cylinder. It should move back and forth once you overcome the pressure of the little spring on the end of it. If is tight, then you should replace the e-brake cables going into the back of the drum. With the channels seized, the e-brake is applied all the time, which forces the adjuster out when the drum heats up and expands, and once it cools, the shoes hold tight against the drum. I can tell you I've replaced many e brake cables up here in Rustconsin.

Message: Schmidtmike you are right on the money! I only had craded and overheated shoes on my left side, right side was OK. When I tried to put the drum back onver the new shoes it would not fit, examining closer I saw the parking brake lever was not at rest position on the rear shoe, it had been held under pressure by the left brake cable which was rusted/frozen. I am replacing L & R parking cables, no more skidding. Who knows how may Gallons of gas I lost driving like that.
