Subject: Fixing gas line leak......

I have found the cause of the gas smell under my truck. It appears there is a small leak coming from the 1/4" metal tubing going from the tank to the fuel filter. I was smelling it because it only leaks when the fuel pump is going and for a short time afterwards. Looks like it might have a small spot that rusted through. Is this something I can fix myself? If so, can you give me some pointers.

You can do it yourself fairly inexpensively. Look at the entire length or fuel line, if it is only corroded in that one spot (unlikely) you can do an inline splice with a short length on 1/4 in fuel line and 2 complete compression fittings (female/male fitting and ferrules). Most likely it is corroded it's entire length, so you will have to replace it fully. Make sure you have the proper sized connectors, a small tubing cutter, and a cheap tube bender. Easy:)

If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

Thanks, I'll give it a shot. I already have a tubing cutter, and I don't think there are any bends in it.
If I do have to replace the whole line (I think it is about 18" long, or so)does one end just screw into the tank, and the other get clamped on the filter. I was looking at fuel line repair kits on Autozone and it looked like one of them just has threads on it and screws into the tank.
Thanks for your help.

I don't know exactly how the 89's are set up, but I think that it with either screw into both the tank and the inline fuel filter or it screw into the fuel filter and has a quick disconnect on the fuel tank. Depending on what the fuel pressure rating on the system, I have seen people use stainless braided rubber fuel line and double hose clamped it with no problems.

If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.
