Message: So is 14mpg a sign that something is wrong with my truck. I drive it fairly hard (spin the tires in the snow, one or two brakestands in the past 6 months), but most of my driving is on the highway.

Message: I have a 2001 quad cab v6 and just got back from a road trip and it averaged 17.4 mpg strictly on the highway and my city mpg averages 13.4. Truch has new plugs, k&n, cap and rotor, all synthetics, What do I need to do to get my mpg up to 16 city 20 highway that the sticker claims ?

Message: check tire inflation and alignment.
how fast were you driving to get 17.4? maybe O2 sensor is "lazy" or bad.

Message: Ugh!!!! Drove city only this week and the truck only got 11.4 MPG. Tire pressure is at 35 psi. Has anyone ever had bad o2's and the check engine light never came on ?

Message: Bullet i got a few questions for ya
ok air filter?
(i know most of us go by milage on replacment
but road/driving conditions will drasticly reduce the life)
also when you noticed a drop in MPG's
the truck seem to be running the same or did it seem to get slugish? or the oposite (more pep)?

and if you can swing the dollars a high flow cat.
i just put a thunder bolt high flow in mine
and not only did i get a real great increase in low end power an trq. put i'm now getting my best MPG's ever.. i want to go another tank or 2 and get all the averages down but best i ever seen was 24 an i'm over that now....
my milage dropped last year, never got a code
i went ahead and change the O2 and it picked back up,,,,,,,,,,
ok and dont over look the things that you might have recently changed to, wont hurt to go back and have a look, (plugs, might have fouled out)
(wire, may be bad -
cap an rotor? how they looking)
my truck is a 94 sport, (reg cab - 2wd)
and it's real light, just over 3000 lbs
but man i highly recomend these converters
to anyone thats getting ready to change or needs to change one .....

Message: Bullet - Before you spend the money for an O2 sensor, Remove the Throttle Body, remove the sensors from it. The sensor at the rear of the TB is the IAC. It is most likely covered with carbon. gently clean it real good. Also clean the TB. Put it all back together and then check your MPG. If that did not fix it, then yes for for the O2 sensor. Total Cost .99cents for a new gasket and 1.69 for TB Cleaner.

Joe my truck only has 65k on it so I doubt the cat is bad.

Message: I have a 3.9 and I got 22 mpg. I say got because I don't have OD now. Even without it I get 18 mpg. Although, I drive 50 - 55, even when the posted speed is 70. The rpm are around 3000 at 55. I hate to try to go faster.
Don't assume the cat isn't bad. A faulty o2 can cause problems over time to a cat.
Now, I don't spin my wheels or power brake as you had said in your post. But taking that in, I'm thinking maybe you could ease up on the gas pedal. LOL.
I hope you find the problem. Good luck!
Mike

I don't care *too* much about the money, but if something is wrong I want to fix it.
I've got 31X10.5 tires, 3.92 gears, 4x4. I didn't expect too great of gas milage.

Message: STEVEBDAK
cleaning the TB an sensor improved my idle plenty
but never did a dam thing for milage
also bullet the 65 thou. dont mean nothing
if your truck has been running rich
(or faulty or bad O2 sensor)
it will waste the cat! there is no set milage on them like anything else it will depend
on the conditions
just a few yrs back my old man had a brand new
Ram (318) the cat had to be raplaced at 42,000
truck had an interm. prob with an O2
that cause it to run rich at times
and no he didnt have to pay a penny to get this all fixed (just an example of how early they "can" go)
