Message: Would there be much of a sound difference if I bought a muffler that was 3" in/out to fit my truck or a 2.5" one? Would it make the sound deeper with the larger one?

Message: The 2.5" Would be a much better choice than the 3" in our V6. The larger Diameter will leave the truck with no backpressure at all, so the 2.5" is just right. As for a low tone, the LONGER muffler you go, the quiter it will be but more lower and bulky of a sound. Hence, why all the ricers' exhausts sound like fart cans but are loud as a SOB. The Dynomax Super Turbo 17748 muffler is a suggestion.

Message: This brings up a good point. In a well-tuned exhaust you do not want backpressure. What you DO want is velocity, which helps scavenge the cylinders. Too large of a diameter allows exhaust gasses to "spread out" and slow down. This not only affects low end but on a mild engine will hurt most of the power band (and it will kill your mpg).
I agree with the Dynomax 17748 if you want good tone without being loud and obnoxious (it's fairly cheap too).
