Subject: Dakota Sport V6 '99 Engine stalls IP: Logged
Message: I have a Dodge Dakota Sport, V6, 3.9L, 2WD. Last summer my engine just died while on a traffic jam that lasted almost an hour. Since then, it has erratically been dying sometimes while driving and sometimes while being in idle, and it seems to prefer to die on warm weather 70F above. It also seems to happen once the engine has warmed up, and most likely after a lengthy drive or after beeing stuck in traffic for a long time.
When driving, I feel a jerky movement and seconds later my RPM and speedometer gauges just go to Zero as the engine dies. My check engine light comes on, and I see "No Bus" on the digital display. After the engine cools off, it starts back again, and the "Check Engine" light goes away. I have been trying to determine what are the causes of this. I took it to a dealer and after running diagnostics, the dealer said it needed a new PCM (about $800). But upon reading posts here, I am not so sure it's the PCM. From posts here it could be
1) PCM
2) Crankshaft Postion Sensor
3) Distributor
4) Fuel Pump
Anyone have any ideas on what I should try first. Know that troubleshooting is sometimes a hit and miss activity, but counting on someone's experience here who have had similar problems. I appreciate any help on this. Thanks,
Carlos

Message: My 97 did the same thing, turned out to be a broken wire to the bottom of the coil. When the wire was cool it would run great but when it heated up from the engine heat, the insulation would allow the break in the wire to seperate. I would jiggle the wire and it would start right back up.

Message: I experienced the same last summer...the culprit was a combo of a dying upstream oxygen sensor and a lazy or sticking AIS motor. fixed both and the prob went away.

Message: well if on your mileage display it say no bus, that means your instrument cluster is dropping signal from the PCM/BCM... thats normally due to a bad connection behind the instrument cluster.... now if it just die while sitting could be due to a bad crank/cam sensor in your distributer.... only way the PCM would be bad is if the engine stalling issue is due to injectors not firing then the driver module in the PCM has gone up.... then replacing of the PCM would be needed....

Message: I need help! My 99 dodge dakota stalled on the way home last night. I put it in neutral and fired it back up again. I gave it gas and it hesitated and I could hear a rattling noise under hood. It stalled again. Did the same thing and it did it all over again. Check engine light came on. Any ideas?

Message: Check for codes. That will tell you why then engine light is on and probably lead you to the source of the problem.

Message: My truck is doing the same thing. Most of my research points towards the PCM. Look online at www.autocomputerexchange.com. You can get the PCM from there for about $270 and it is already programmed for your truck.
Please post what the cause is when you fix it, because I need to know too! Thanks

Message: My 98 Dakota 3.9 stalled & died
on me all the time. I cleaned the
connections on the pcm &
harnesses going to the pcm. I
also backed out the two screws
going into the pcm.The pcm had
no dielectric grease in it either.
So I cleaned the bolt holes that
hold the pcm on. And put
dielectric grease in the pins on
the pcm. My truck has not died
once since then.
