Subject: Fan swap?
IP: Logged

Message:
The clutch fan on my 96 3.9 has been dying an agonizing death for some time. I want to replace it with an electric and am aware of the process for removing the stock fan.

The question I have is do I need to put any kind of nut back on the water pump, or is the pulley pressed on/integral to the water pump? If a nut is needed, what size/thread is it?

I will most likely use a modified 3.8 Taurus fan, or a Mark VIII Lincoln fan as I have a couple lying around (spares for my Stang).

Thanks for any help given, and please don't razz me for putting Ford parts on it, it's what I have handy.

There is a big nut behind the clutch that just
unscrews the pully stays on the pump no need
to even remove the belt

Elect fan 3000cfm or bigger and a flexolite
thermo control thru a 30 amp sol works well
on the 6

I am running a perma cool 16" 2950 cfm $100

Would I need to remove the stock shroud on a 2001 CC 3.9? Or will the electric fan work with it?

Thanks Larry, I was just concerned about the pulley coming off. When I replaced my timing set, I took the whole pump/fan assembly off so I didn't have the opportunity to see how it was put together. The 3.8 Taurus fan is the same thing I use to cool a 450rwhp 351W, it should handle the little V6 with ease, even in the Indiana summers and it'll be an almost perfect fit.

you'll be way happier with the fan swap
best thing i noticed was the AC
in hot weather stuck in traffic or hitting alot of lights the AC used to get weak,
now it will stay ice cold all the time
