Hey all. I was merging onto the interstate the other night, usual procedure (wind it to 4k in 3rd, gets me to my 75mph cruise speed nice & quick), but something happened this time that I've never experienced: from 3-4k, my Dak started blowing what was either a cloud of fine dust or not-very-dense smoke from the tailpipe. It doesn't use any coolant or oil, so I doubt it's burning those fluids. Did it just blow out some carbon, or should I be worried? Any input would be much appreciated; thanks in advance, guys.

And the fact it never happened before does not rule out a leak like a head gasket letting coolant into cylender or oil from a possible bad seal on a valve just going bad just to name a couple off the top of my head. Keep your eyes open to everything untill you nail it down. All problems have a starting point.

So many problems .... So little time

Sounds to me like you stirred up the accumulated carbon and moisture in the exhaust. Mine will do it to when I putter around town for a day or two then hit the bypass and wind it out. At night with someones lights on it, it looks like a huge cloud, it's not. Try it in the daylight.

Thanks to all for your replies. In response to the first 4 replies, it happened at night, so the darkness plus the cloud being of such low density prevented me from being able to tell if it even had color, but I appreciate the suggestion. DrPepper & daddio, you described exactly what I experienced - it was at night, and in the headlight shine of the cars around me, it looked like this massive dust cloud. I took your advice, & lugged the truck around town a few more days, then wound it out during the day - couldn't see any smoke, just like you said. OBIO3 & bigdave, thanks for the tips, especially re: the brown smoke signalling cat failiure; I'd never heard about that before. BTW, haven't experienced any smoke of any color before or since the incident I initially described. Also, still no coolant or oil use (only got 53k mi on it). Thanks again guys!

From time to time I see huge puffs of smoke come from all sorts of vehicles, at a constant speed, as opposed to hard acceleration. I immagine it must be the exhaust caughing up its version of a hairball, since it only seems to happen once.
